RHCP were a staple of me teens in the 90s. That Californication album was HUGE. I have great memories partying to it in my late teens. Blood Sugar Sex Magic brought me into my teens, and One Hot Minute was part of the soundtrack of high school.

So while I’ve tired of them recently (though a few of the Klinghoffer songs were nice), the subject matter of this song will take it up a few notches.

Nice to see such a tribute.

It's also touching because Frusciante is really a Hendrix guy and has close to zero Eddie influence, BUT on this song went out of his way to change his playing and add some Eddie-ism. That's really a well-done tribute, and a touching one from another big LA band.

Dont be so sure... Frusciante was a bit of a shredder back in the day. Flea once discribed him like this....

[i]"He was just a kid when he joined," says Flea, "totally overexuberant about everything. His playing was amazing. He was technically very competent and much more theoretically knowledgeable than I was, with a bit of the Steve Vai guitar wizard damage"[i/]

He thanked Vai on one of the album credits too (cant remember which one) and i seem to remember him taking lessons or jamming with Vai a lot back in the day too (cant quite remember though, read this years ago).

So being a EVH fan shouldn't be to much of a stretch. Plus, Flea LOVED VH, particularly VH2

Most of the "alternative" guys that essentially became more succesfull post hair metal had more ties to the music they killed then they wanted to admit. Van Halen was a very popular band with a great guitarist. Like the majority of teenagers picking up a guitar from late 70's to early 80's the more you could do, the more likely you impressed people. These guys dipped their toes into learning some of his licks. Just like I didn't love Hendrix but learned some in the event some girl was into classic rock

Very cool of them to do it.

“Eddie” is a tribute to Eddie Van Halen. Here’s what Anthony Kiedis said about the song:

Sometimes we don’t realize how deeply affected and connected we are to artists until the day they die. Eddie Van Halen was a one of a kind. The day after his death Flea came into rehearsal with an emotional bassline. John, Chad and I started playing along and pretty soon with all our hearts, a song in his honor effortlessly unfolded. It felt good to be sad and care so much about a person who had given so much to our lives. Although the song doesn’t speak to Eddie by name, it talks about his early days on the Sunset Strip and the rock n roll tapestry that Van Halen painted on our minds. In the end, our song asks that you not remember Eddie for dying but for living his wildest dream.

How ironic. The bass player walked in with a bass line and the band turned it into an Eddie Van Halen tribute. Just saying.
