    Kramer Ď84 Diver Down

Couldnít pass this up. $799 from Music Zoo. Pre-installed D-tuna + trem-blockÖ and a shitty gig bag :/

Setup from store was abysmal. Spent about an hour getting it playable. Killer fucking guitar, though!! So fun to play!! The JB is a very underrated pickup. I almost canít tell the difference between this and my EVH 5150, sound-and-playability-wise. Actually, they both feel very similar. The Kramer is a bit heavier in the body. You can really feel the difference between the lighter basswood (5150) and heavier alder (or whatever it is) of the Kramer. Neck feels super great! Once itís setup proper itís a kick ass little guitar!!

I swapped the chrome volume knob out for an EVH/MXR style knob. I also had to add a piece of white tape across the headstock, because the plain, all-red headstock was driving me crazy!! Lol!

Thereís a few other mods I still want to do. But Iím gonna play it for a few days and see what it really needs Ö for me anyway

    More guitars!! Yeehaww!!!

Ok, so after a couple days of heavy playing, I think the Seymour Duncan JB is a bit ice-pick-y for my taste, and compared to my other guitars through my amp/pedalboard setup. I have a Seymour Duncan Custom SH-5 that I might put in this thing.

Any opinions before I do surgery on this Kramer? Lol.

So, the JB is actually a great little pickup. It just doesnít mix well when switching to my other guitars (Wolfgang, 5150, AX40-d), itís pretty bright! I noticed that juicing the front end of my amp a bit more (MXR micro boost) helps, but I might just add another(!!) EQ to the pedalboard to contour the sound.

I really like how it reacts to picking pressure, though. No surgery yet for the new Kramer! Lol! Pedalboard surgery for sure

I did sand the back of the neck with a scotchbrite pad to get rid of the satin finish. Love the feeling of that bare wood!! Iíll put some Tru-Oil on it today, just to seal it.

Gonna add a brass big block for sure, intonation, etcÖ maybe swap in a low-friction volume pot and get rid of the coil splitÖ I donít know.

Ok. No more posts about this goddamn thingÖ unless I start tearing it apart!

I didn’t like the JB in my Kramer either. I put an EVH Wolfgang pickup on the Kramer, and it was too tall. The strings were almost touching the pickup. Not sure the height of the pickup you want to swap the JB for, but just an FYI.

Good luck, and nice guitar. Love the Diver Down look of that guitar.

Thanks for the info Scott! Yeah, I love the look and feel of the Diver Down!

You just have to add a shim or two (or a pick!) in the neck pocket if the pickup is too high. Iím thinking of maybe putting an EVH Frankenstein pickup in this thing, but Iím gonna mess with my pedalboard first. I love how all my other guitars sound through this setup. The JB is still still a bit spikey, but I also kinda like it nowÖ

    Fucking guitarsÖ.

Maybe try reducing the Treble and/or Presence levels on your amp?

I did, but my amp and pedalboard are eqíd perfect for all my other guitars, so the adjustment makes them all sound too dull. Donít wanna have to do change amp settings during a show for just one guitar. I think an additional eq pedal on my pedalboard with settings just for the Kramer is the answer

True story. I lived in 2 different houses from my birth through high school. The first house was on Basswood St. and the second on Alder Ave. It was so weird reading that line in your post!

Love the look of that Diver Down!

You could try a 250k pot with the JB. That moves the resonant peak down and could tame some of that high end.

Even less invasive - just solder a 500k resistor from hot to ground on the volume pot. Turns the pot into a 250k and is reversible with just a pair of wire cutters. The sweep of the pot may be impacted, but if you like the tone you could swap for a proper 250k pot.

Ooo!! I like this idea!! Iíve been looking for an excuse to break out the soldering iron! Maybe Iíll just toss in a 250k potÖ because I have oneÖ and see what happens Thanks man!!

I like the Wolfgang pickup tone a lot better. The JB is just to bright.

One thing Iíve noticed recently, is how much warmer the guitar sounds with Titanium String Lock Insert Blocks installed in the Floyd Rose. Really makes a big difference.

AhÖ thatís good to know I usually put a brass big block in every Floyd guitar I own. Iím not sure if thatís gonna help tame the spikiness of the JB (probably not) but it sure makes the guitars come alive! Iíve got one on order. Weíll see. Need to order more solder so I can futz around with pickups in this thing. I think Iíll get rid of the coil split pot and put a normal one in, too. 500k or 250k. Might as well try Ďem both. After thatÖ new pickup shopping!

Alright, so I put an EVH Frankenstein pickup and a CTS 500k volume pot in the Kramer and now this thing totally SMOKES!!! This is exactly what I wanted this guitar to sound like!! I also prefer the Gibson spacing and the all-black bobbins. It just looks right

I ordered an EVH low-friction volume pot because the CTS is just way to stiff, and Iím so used to them on all my other guitars, anywayÖ but holy hell this Kramer is a fun beast to play now!

I was worried about the pickup leg height, but itís perfect.

Well, thatís it. Replace the volume pot and Iím done! Now it can hang with my other guitars without futzing around with amp and pedalboard settings!
