While I'm not a fan of the production on Blizzard , there is NOTHING wrong with Randy's tone on Diary.
That is one of the cleanest sounding rock/metal albums I've ever heard.

It literally sounds like you are sitting the middle of the studio and they are playing live.

I know VHI is the gold standard for most, but there's just TOO much plate reverb on Ed's guitar listening to it now (for me). I like VHII better. Sounds more raw and realistic to the live sound of the band...

I'd prob say it's my favorite production/mix of the 6-pack. That or 84.

I've said before, I tossed Blizzard in the trash because all those songs are on Tribute and sound alot better live.

I've always preferred Diary to Blizzard for the songs and especially for Randy's tone.

Yeah Randy's tone was subpar to Eddies. Guess what? Eddie's tone on Gene Simmons demo sucks yet great on VH1. Why? Ted and Donn. Producer and engineer means a lot. They fired the original producer of Blizzard and used a first time producer with Max. He was like Donn. Less experience. Studios cost money. The guitarist of a band will be learning on the production team. They are not going to tweak for hours a tone when you don't have money. Not saying he would ever get Eddie's tone but Brian May never had Eddies tone. Neither did a host of other guitarists. George Lynch's tone sucked up until Under Lock and Key. Two albums of crap tone. Jake's tone on Blizzard is sub part too.

Van Halen weren't even using their own gear on the Gene Simmons demo tape. It was all KISS equipment -- guitars, amps, drums, everything. That's a big reason why Eddie's tone sounded different. And obviously Van Halen is going to sound better on a proper studio release vs a demo tape.
