Tom Petty, but not because I dislike Dire Straits. My three year old boy's favorite song is Free Fallin and asks for Tom Petty by name and it's fucking adorable, so I'm a little biased now.
CNN may think my opinion matters, but you shouldn't.

TP and the Heartbreakers have a better catalog of albums and songs. There are so many great songs, both hits and also deeper cuts.
This is not a slight on Dire Straits, whom I really like as well, but I like TP and the Heartbreakers more. If this was a Mark Knopfler vs. Mike Campbell as a guitarist thread, I'd take Knopfler all day long. He's a great player, and the 2nd best rock guitarist to release his debut album in 1978

Dire Straits.
Mark Knopfler is one of those "league of their own" players, like Eddie. I'll never get tired of hearing Sultans of Swing.
Conversely, I could do without hearing pretty much every Tom Petty radio hit. Plus, the drum tone in "Don't Come Around Here No More" reminds me why I fucking hate electronic drums.

Dire Straits.
A six pack of almost pure perfection. The debut is right up there with The Cars and Boston as albums/songs I never tire of.
I find it odd that most of Mark Knopfler's solo work is just shit to my ears. Boring.
I have and love all of TP's albums (+Wilbury's), but whenever I go to the shelf to pick one... I always go "Eh!"... and choose someone else. Just did that over the weekend.
Even though I stuck with him through out, Petty kind of lost me with probably Into The Great Wide Open. They pretty much started repeating themselves after that. Can't explain it but it just didn't move me like it used to. It was so far removed from his earlier work.
Plus Petty had that Jeff Lynne stink on him for a bit too long, back in the day.
But... for the record... I still love Don't Come Around Here No More... and Let Me Up (I've Had Enough) is a personal favorite album, front to back.
OK, this is stupid... I'm done.

Dire Straits is my pick. They are a much better band to me. Especially Mark Knopfler on guitar. Brothers In Arms got a lot of play in my house growing up.
Right Now you're reading my post!
I can't stand rap....people who can't sing do rap....you can sing rebellion as well as talk it....Hitler would have been in a rap band...

Petty for me. I think he progressed better than Dire Straits and created more memorable music.

I'd pick both of em.
Because they're not alike at all and wouldn't be in the same arena.

I'm just a casual fan of either but I'm probably more familiar with a larger extent of the music from Petty than DS. Though I suspect I'd be cooler if I picked DS
