Default So what is the story behind that "Finish What Ya Started" remix

The first time I heard it was in the mid 90s from the UNCD
    http://www.vhboots.com/unreleased.html

The story I've always heard was that Warner Bros was testing the waters to see if the public was willing to like a poppy version of Van Halen. It was only released out to stations in California and died a quick death. For some reason it doesn't get talked about much. I posted it to reddit and people seem to think its fake. I think its way too good of a remix to be a fake. This was at least made in the mid 90s without the computer tools of today and it seemed like it was recorded from masters from the way they have Sammy's vocals isolated from the mix.

So its some 30 years later, what say you?

Does not sound like Alex playing. Probably a fake.

Besides from the liner notes, this is the only post I've seen about it.

Never heard that before but I like it! That said, I'd be amazed if it was official. Probably made by some DJ at the time.

Interesting - even the actual single was a “remix” (though I doubt it was as drastic as that!)

I went down this route too. I'm highly doubting this is anything, the OU812 album version is also 4:20 long. What is remixed about it though I have no clue.

Listening to the dance remix around the 3:30 part when it gets to the "I like to look at the long run". Its just Sam, his guitar, and a synth. I thought "oh, Eddie's guitar is hard panned one way and Sams guitar is panned the other way on the original recording, so surely someone came along and just recorded that stereo channel. Problem is even in the right ear with Sam's guitar and vocals you can also hear Al's drumming in the original mix. How in lets say even if someone faked this in 1995. How did they remove Al's drum from the mix and get such a clear vocal and guitar without Al's Drum. That's what gives the story of WB putting this out since they could of had access to the recording and done it easily.

I have zero clues, but I don't think Warner Bros would have tried that hard to make a dance mix. It still seems more likely to me that a DJ did it. Even back then they had some pretty cool tools to make dance mixes from Top 40 hits. It could just be a matter of drowning out Al's drums with the dance mix drums while pumping up the vocals. Again, no real clue, but I wouldn't rule it out.

The only info I have on it is from the Merrie Melodies bootleg box set from the late '90s. They weren't sure if it was official either. It was only rumored to be. Here's is a link to the liner notes (FWYS is on the far right):

    http://www.vhboots.com/bGraphics/unreleased_inside.jpg

And there's no mention of it in The Van Halen Encyclopedia either. It does list a bunch of remixes in the singles section for OU812, but doesn't specify if a dance remix was one of them.

That remix sounds like something for a movie soundtrack from the 80s.

    It's real.

    VH and WB did it...

I would assume during the OU812 sessions.

You can't fake this much arrangement, and especially detailed vocal changes that all musically work together.

Whatever that mess is is fucking horrible. And it doesn’t sound like it’s real drums at all it’s just a drum machine.
