Oh I know. I was trying to make a funny. No idea why I thought it's funny. If it needs to be explained obviously not funny. I'm such a dork.

I would've been curious to hear what Rhoads would've come up with after his stuff with Ozbourne. Maybe it would've been cool, or maybe it would've been too slick and overproduced like everything else in the late 80s.

Yep who knows what he would have done. Could have done a makeup band since you he loved glam. Could have put out some real crap. That's what happens when you die young. You don't get the chance to mess up and put up cringe worthy stuff. Jimi Hendrix may have done a disco album. Maybe a few of them. Randy could have done some hair metal with lipstick on. Kurt Cobain could have gotten into Alt Pop or maybe Nu Metal. Maybe just kind of had a Pearl Jam career. SRV could have ventured into something else which wasn't good.

That said, typically the best stuff you get from an artist will happen early on in their career anyway. Even with Eddie. I know people will say "oh he was great the entire time" Yeah but the guitarist EVH since about 5150 wasn't the guy who did the first 6 albums. He wasn't interested in being that guitar god anymore. Doesn't mean the music was crap but its hard to be champion sleeping on silk sheets. HE wasn't putting in hours a day playing the guitar. He wasn't trying to change the instrument. He simply wasn't as groundbreaking. Its fine. It happens to everybody.

Just lucky we get the guys when we can

Eddie broke so much ground on just the 1st album alone - there wasn't much left to break.

The song "Diary of a Madman" alone puts Randy up there in rarified air.

As incredible as Vai is, I don't know if he ever had that "influence" on players because he is so good that you can't even really try to learn/play his shit as a beginner.

I started off learning ATBL, Crazy Train, some KISS tunes... It was possible to play that at 15. Vai is so far out there I just never even bothered trying. Maybe Jedi could get something from his playing.. For me I just listen in awe and enjoy.

Yeah Vai is incredible. For me he is a musicians guitarist. Eddie and Randy (and most other popular guitarists) fall into another category which appeals to musicians and that soccer mom. Sometimes it comes down to that these guitarists simply don't make music that is easily accessible to people. Not because it isn't good its just not the type of music that a non-musician can get into. They don't want multiple time or key changes. They love guitar solos but they love choruses too. I know someone will say Tender Surrender is a beautiful song. It is. However you likely won't get that guy in his IROC cranking it up with a 6 pack of banquet beer in the passenger seat.

Diary Of A Madman's guitars have been isolated. Enjoy Randy at his best and turn it up!

This and Unchained are my favorite riffs of all time. You may think I'm crazy but I hear SGMAD in there and If You Were Here by the Thompson Twins....

What you are saying about Vai isn't true. He played on plenty of songs with great choruses with David Lee Roth and Whitesnake.

Of course he played on some DLR songs. However at his core, he isn't that person. Its outside of his comfort box. Can't count Whitesnake since Adrian Vanderberg wrote all the songs. Vai simply tooko the demos and rerecorded them. Vai is great but for him write something that is popular, he has to step out of his zone and emulate somebody else. For example EVH with DLR. Eddie wrote stuff that naturally came out as user friendly. Randy the same way. They write for hooks. Vai writes for more complex arrangements.

Its ok. He has made a great career doing what he loves

That says more about Dave. Ziggs said it and it’s true. Adrian wrote damn near everything. In fact, the only reason that Steve plays guitar on slip of the tongue is that Adrian had surgery. Adrian was not a fan of Steve’s playing. Coverdale was.

Coverdale and Vandenberg wrote it all.

And vai is a badass. And I give him all the credit in the world. He does what he loves and gives 2 fucks about commercial performance.
