My girlfriend has a couple so I did buy one for her.

My understanding is that was not investor money or franchised, that DLR funded that totally on his own.

I can only imagine how many millions he lost on that venture. Ouch.

Too bad, good idea, but the business graveyard is full of good ideas.

He had a couple of partners in the business but I remember an interview just last year where he said it took years of development and 7 million dollars to get this to market! Hopefully there will be money made by selling the formula but I think he said that there weren't any competitors. WIth tattoos coming into the mainstream, I wonder why it failed. Even when people aren't getting new tattoos because of the pandemic, there are still milllions of people out there with tattoos to maintain.

I just looked it up on Amazon and while he said there were not competitors in this line, there are actually DOZENS of companies ..After Inked, Keep your Ink, Tattoo goo, Ink Inspired,Ed Hardy Ink. Black Rose, Malibu Tan, Ink Scribd, Mad Rabbit, Viking Revolution, Tat Wax, Fisticuffs and more....there are SO MANY I would say the market is crowded. Maybe there weren't many when he started development but they beat him to the market

Tattoo Goo is most popular in my area. A lot of the shops sell it or recommend it. I bought some of Dave's products and they were great. I'm sorry this didn't work long term.

Don't know about the others, but Tattoo Goo has been around for at least 20-25 years.

If I understood correctly (??), this, " INK- The Original" , product was geared towards protecting tattoos from the sun....????

I remember my first thought back then when David's venture was brand new ...Thought to myself....Hmnnnn....

Realistically, How many tattoo enthusiasts spend enough time in the sun on a regular basis to warrant success with sales of a product such as this....

How many months of the year is the sun so bright & rays so powerful assuming the tattooed folks are out & about with their shirts off exposed to direct sunlight in the first place. Maybe 2 to 3 months a year depending on the city.

Does California even have clear blue sky with direct sunlight anymore? Or has smog ruined the skyline. Why is almost everyone down there seem to look peaked & pasty white devoid of suntan.

For this product to stand a chance in hell David would've had to pound the pavement door to door to solicit the top tattoo parlours & artists in every single demographic to pursade those top tattoo shops to carry & promote his Ink The Original product with display cases & setups & advertising.

Like Paul Mitchell shampoo in hair salons.

I'm sorry but it was a stupid idea right from the get go.

If you would've told me 20 - 30 years ago that Black Sabbath guitarist would be selling his own brand of Cologne & David Lee Roth selling Tattoo creme I'd say you are crazy.

But here we are in 2022.

What David really should've attempted to market is ICE CREAM.

Think about it.

Diamond Dave's California Ice Cream. All kinds of flavours. And push ups too.

That would've worked. Everybody likes Ice Cream.

Always thought whiskey and cigars would have been a natural for DLR to venture into.

Maybe he didn't want to look like he was copying Sam, but plenty of artists have their own liquor.
