Default A Realistic and Reasonable Box Set Plus More Posthumous Releases for Alex and Wolf

    ...When When They Are Ready.

This post is slightly long--just slightly, though!--but I've been meaning to do this since October 2020 and saw that others have done some smaller versions of this, but I decided to come up with a, once again, REASONABLE and REALISTIC box set even by Van Halen standards including a couple other posthumous releases. And W.D.F.A-style. Well, I.D.F.A., technically. WHEN THEY, AL AND WOLF, ARE COMFORTABLE WITH IT AND HAVE THE TIME of course. And I say "realistic and reasonable" because most of it is stuff I and many of you (and YouTube now for that matter) have had for decades that needs properly released with just a fair amount of new unreleased stuff for us die-hard psychos. Shit, I used to say "it should include a live soundboard CD/pro-shot DVD of each tour and at least 30 unreleased songs we've never heard." I'm more likely to become best buddies with the band and hang out on a weekly basis (bars, movies, shopping, etc.). I get that. So let's give them a million-person-plus huge "PLEASE!" in unison.

    I. R&R (BOX SET INCLUDING HOME VIDEO):

For the heck of it, I called the CD/DVD set "R&R." "Rock and roll"..."Realistic and Reasonable." It's also apparently military slang/an abbreviation for "Rest and Recuperation," "Rest and Relaxation," Rest and Recreation," or "Rest and Rehabilitation," which kind of apply, too (although it's really for the time of a soldier or international UN staff serving in unaccompanied duty stations). Hey, if I'm gonna do this, might as well put in the effort. You're welcome A&WVH and you owe me one! Maybe a performance in my backyard of a setlist of my choosing would suffice. Nevertheless, it's only 2 discs of unreleased material. That's fair and asking little. That's fair even though we'd prefer 10. We'd also prefer it to be all songs we never heard before but that's not realistic. And including all of the unreleased song wouldn't be reasonable. Let Warner Bros. release whatever they have, which would I'm sure include possibly some combination of the 25-song demos and more of the VH-1984 original/different versions of already-released songs like the RTWD and DTNA ones we heard. But that's not what this is. Anyways...

Notes (if ya give a half-a shit):

    D1

1 Because it's their first full-band unreleased song to our knowledge, and a hats off to Mark Stone.
2 Fun, catchy, and single-worthy at the time at least.
3 Figured I would at least include the Top 3 remakes in my opinion. Prefer the WB demo but have to have 1 Gene Simmons demo (sorry, Sexy Sadie). Knowing him, I'm sure he'll release something too if he's allowed.
4 Fun, catchy, and rockin' WB demo. Will have the RD bridge duplicate though, bothering me and all fellow OCDers but needs to be on here.
5 Hard rockin' fan-favorite from the WB demo.
6 Another WB demo and maybe their best. Could also be a good box set title. You know, Eddie being the "light."
7 Different than what they usually do and such a great hook for the chorus. For the next 3 songs, hopefully there are demos that were made unbeknownst to us, but if not, just use the best live version recordings.
8 Such great verse vocal melody, much like LITS.
9 Their best overall if you count remakes (and my first unreleased bootleg song).
10 Eddie Trunk said he's heard them and it's stuff that's not already out there in the bootleg market. I'm sure there's at least 1 we haven't heard before.
11 It's been said it was recorded for VHII. Maybe even the whole band's on this one.
12 Maybe "Act Like It Hurts" has vocals. Either way it should be on here to represent WACF. And still waiting on Hausman's corrected title reveal as promised years ago!
13 Edward spent all of that time sneaking in the studio. There's gotta be 1.
14 This one was always one of their best, and I went with the Diver Down version that didn't make the cut. "Voodoo Queen" and "Let's Get Rockin'" were close runners-up. I'm sure they'd be on WB's release anyway.
15 First song recorded at 5150! We know you have the motherfucker. Would be a cool single to release as well. Can only image how awesome it sounds as no one does covers like our boys.
16 Figured one alternate version would be on here, so I chose the big boy.
+EXTRA: You know, they were like a comedy team back in the old days. Funny as hell (and obnoxious as hell). And not just Dave. I think the 1979 Seattle radio interview is the best example of that. Would need to be edited of course to fit.

    D2

1 Those online documents say this exists. Let's not "Forget 1" about this--come on!
2 If it was recorded, even if it was another song that ended up a Hagar tune like SN or GE. And there were several other titles from the year before in 1984 like the above if not, such as "Anything to Make It Right," "Baritone Slide," "5150 Special," "Lie to You," the aforementioned one I hinted at, and "Blow the Man Down," although I can't recall where I heard that last song title. And we all know what became of "Ripley." And Waldo.
3 This bad-ass tune re-released by Lukather under a different title and lyrics is a must.
4 One of the recorded unreleased songs that exists per Sammy was from OU812 so I'm sure this is it.
5 Sammy said there were only 2 recorded songs. Love the man, but he sucks with numbers as we all know. So I'm sure 1 of the 3 FUCK song titles we've heard was recorded to some degree. Either way, I picked this one over "The Wish (which may have ended up "Returning of the Wish" or even "Once")" or "You Never Know." And I don't think Sam's instrumental intro to the Marching to Mars b-side "Wash Me Down" has anything to do with this. He probably just likes the word and wanted to use it for something.
6 He said the other is one from Balance. Let's give Sammy a remake, too, and I'm assuming it's this one anyways for good reason. Unless he's talking about "I Remember," "Shaker," "Baby Come Down," or "Hendrix Jam," which I still insist is "The Trouble with Never," especially after Mike's "Are You Gonna Go My Way" comparison.
7 Ah, the Sammy era Holy Grail. "Unchained" meets "Dreams." Their "Stairway to Heaven." I'm sure there's some type of recording for this Twister soundtrack/BOVI tune. Quit torturing us and release it please, even if it's YTTD or whatever.
8 We've heard numerous tentative and I'm sure recorded song titles for the VH3 follow-up. I picked these. And the first one was reportedly their best rocker. When I met Gary after a Tribe Of Judah show in 2002 I asked him about the similarities to it and the one he recorded for Exit Elvis. He said they are only a little similar.
9 If it's anything like Hurtsmile's best song from their second album with the vice-versa title, we'd be in for a real treat.
10 Sounds like a winner so just picked that name.
11 Hey, I like love songs so kiss my ass. I didn't include TWILY because Mitch already put his version out (even though Cherone's is better despite the vocal-push they made him do which could have been a lot better if they just let Gar be Gar). And I didn't include VH3 leftovers like "Blood From a Rock," "It's Not Over 'til It's Over," "Why? Because Why," etc. because let's just stick with the hard-rockin' more vintage-Halen-sounding follow-up (not that I didn't love 3).
12 Is in the chorus of "Ambiguous Headdress" from Exit Elvis, but that was one of their most industrial/electronica songs so can't image it being similar. Cool title though, so chose it.
13 Who knows if this or "Tabula Rasa" was real. If so, gotta include. If not there's the Yes cover of "Your Move (I've Seen all Good People)" that was on the ASCAP web site as an official Van Halen recording back in 2000. If so, strange one but wow that would be some great Michael Anthony background vox. If a mistake, I'm sure there's a possibility the "Magic Carpet Ride" was legit. 1 of these 3 year-2000 rumors hopefully are true. I've also heard the song titles "Reactor" and "Jump to the Beat."
14 This was a rumored title floating around the Internet from TBOBW sessions. They WERE shooting for a full studio album, so it's somewhat plausible.
15 Let's hear 1 of the handful of tunes from the second and likely-third failed reunion attempt with Mikey on background vocals. This seems like the direction they were going into at time so I chose this one. This has to be one of the 2000-2001 recordings given Dave's love for techno dance, and just listen to the riff of "Flex" (I know, it's re-lyric'd techno song called "The Crablouse," but still) and the obvious chorus vocal melody of "'How About A Little Fire' Scarecrow?" from the No Holds Bar-B-Que right after in 2002.
16 Wolf stated there was 1 recorded, not 35 like Ed said. And this one he said is "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love" meets "Panama"--holy shhhit!
+EXTRA: And you know, they were like a family after that. Still funny (and obnoxious), but more camaraderie. And I think the 1991 FUCK radio premiere interview is the best example of that and would need to be edited of course to fit. These are absolutely needed to truly show what both eras were about.

    D3

Since this is mostly Dave era, obviously this needs to be remastered and it's been long-awaited. Too long. So 2 discs go to The Red Rocker to be fair.

    D4

    See above.

    D5

1 I know it's just a partial version from the 1977-1978 Whisky A-Go-Go pre-MTV music videos, but it's a cool and proper intro that should have been on Video Hits Volume I. As should have the rest of these. And I know we've all seen these a zillion times and some of these below videos are on their official YouTube channel, but for the sake of being realistic and reasonable, but these need to be released officially.
    2 Whisky music vid.
    3 Whisky music vid.
    4 Whisky music vid.
5 From the Rochester, NY live sessions, and keep the backstage intro/limo outro part. Again, can't use all 3 for R&R reasons and space limitations.
6 Also to rep the highly-under-bootlegged WACF, I used this to have something. And Diamond Dave's furry boots were the tie-breaker over the "Loss of Control" vid.
7 I'm convinced the real Holy Grail is more attainable over the Oakland, CAs. Plus it seems more likely by the powers-that-be that it's unfortunately only the tres. I didn't include it on the below live DVD because it was their music video. Same with DTNA. And how the fuck were all of these not on VHVI?!
8 Anally-retentively speaking, "Strung Out" was mistakenly (I'm sure) included on The Best of Both Worlds as the "Not Enough" intro, so no need to name "Intruder." This one-of-the-first music videos banned on MTV is a must and am still surprised it wasn't on VHVI. And I didn't include the big three from 1984 because they were already on VHVI.
9 There's a possibly-official version of this that Much Music in Canada aired where the studio version was overdubbed. If not, a pro-shot live version exists, too, but I think one is more proper for this DVD. Either way, 5150 was excluded from VHVI and needs to be represented here. I would have included BOBW from Live without a Net but it already exists on DVD format and this isn't VHVII necessarily.
10 Of the 3 that exist, I chose the concept music video version because it's such a fun, uplifting, and cool video for such a fun, uplifting, and cool song. And how was this left off VHVI? Left off FSG but all of the Roth videos weren't included either.
11 Fun video that wasn't included the first time.
12 Since "Without You" is already on the VHVI DVD version (which is odd given the timeline), I included this so Gary has one. Was considering "Once" which I like more, but FITH is the one the majority of the fans like. I aced 2004's IAT vid sans Mike since it's apparently unsanctioned and a taboo topic. And too bad MWM didn't have a video made, but oh so close.
13 Music vid that I still think the intentional imperfections were unnoticed and improperly critiqued.
14 Music vid that is among their all-time best.

+EXTRAS: These would have to be obviously edited and trimmed down to fit the rest of 1 DVD because we are being so R&R, but should include as much of the following as possible (or ESPECIALLY stuff we've never seen to add to it):
1 Pre-'78 Early home videos that were mentioned by one of the band members as I recall (hey the EVH beach football vid was put out!)
2 '78 Marshall Berle soft-core porn (I kid, but maybe just a clip without nudity to show their historically unmatched debauchery along with Zeppelin).
3 '79 The record signing footage already out there (I think from Toronto) but with audio.
4 '80 That supposed "Cocksucker Blues"-like backstage footage if any exists. I know the camcorders were BS on stage, but I'm still thinking there is some.
5 '81 The Amsterdam footage that already exists.
6 '82 DLR Interview with that Doug guy (so fuckin' funny--the one with his bet with Alex). Or maybe a compilation of it and the MTV Martha Quinn, MTV Mark Goodman , Jim Ladd, Friday Night Videos, Lisa Robinson, or Letterman interviews from the '80s. Pick 1 or 2 good ones because him being the best comedic and wittest/most intelligent/party animalin'/life-lovin'/one-linin' rock star ever needs to be documented.
7 '83 Backstage US Festival video that's phony but funny as fuck.
8 '84 Rape of the Vaults "Jump" and "Panama" outtake but with audio so we can actually hear it. Especially the 10-blondes with midgets yacht party!
    9 '84 MTV Lost Weekend.
10 '84 EVH live with The Jacksons doing "Beat It" in Irving, TX.
11 '86 VH Unleashed. Another great example of the camaraderie. Just some interviews, especially band and at least 1 Sammy.
12 '88 Monsters of Rock press conference footage.
13 '92 MTV VMAs winning and accepting the award for Best Video.
14 '96 MTV VMAs. At least the utterly-moving standing O needs to be documented. And maybe Dave's "Gimme your MTV" quote lol...
15 '07 Press conference. Again, just a clip. Still can't believe it actually finally happened.
16 '12 Dave interviewing Ed and Al clip.
17 '15 EVH interview at The Smithsonian clip.

II. LOOK AT ALL THE PEOPLE HERE TONIGHT, LIVE! (LIVE ALBUM & HOME VIDEO):

And after that some years later--what a title--has to be it for this live album of the best live band since the beginning of mandkind in their prime that was insanely never released before. Yes, Dave wasn't at his best and the band played a little faster, but it was their biggest tour, The Tour of the World, when they were undoubtedly the biggest band on Earth. And as the aforementioned online document said, Largo/Landover/Washington, D.C. has been proven to exist. Not just 1982, yo. And have the audio and video (CD/DVD) match unless indicated otherwise (for obvious redundancy reasons). Anyways, the cream of the crop:

    Notes:

    1

1-16 Largo, MD 1984. Not sure if "Happy Trails" would be included in the setlist as it usually wasn't on that tour, but somewhat often.

    2

    1-2 Largo 1984 continued.
3 Any footage of a live song that exists from the Club Days. There's gotta be one. Whatever ya got and are willing to share. Please. (Finally something came out last year though--a minute long without sound, but it's a start!)
4 The Anaheim, CA footage Dave already put out on the Jumbotron from his 2002 tour with Sammy and on The Roth Show of them entering the stage after "landing" in their parachute gear. I'm sure they have the opening song that followed it while they're cameras were out. A song that show how they exploded on the scene and blew the headling Sabbath off the stage.
5 Now that Fresno, CA's cleaned up, this one is the best because of the screaming call and response between Dave and Ed at the beginning.
6 More Fresno, CA. Eddie at his youngest and hungriest reinventing the guitar.
7 Rochester CD-only, because it was on the first DVD above.
8 Rochester, NY again so there's some VHII video. Their ultimate party tune.
9 Somewhere on the World Invasion Tour. I think the WACF Largo might have be on that online WB list, too (I have it printed out but would have to dig it up). I'd like to see a whole pro-shot show of that year, but I'll refrain to be loyal to my rule. I'm sure a bootleg will surface SOME DAY. I'd suck 5,150 dicks for some more 1980 live.
10 Let's see that Davesickle in action! Wherever, probably same show.
11 Oakland, CA again so there's some FW video.
12 Oakland CD-only, because it was on the first DVD above.
13 Largo, MD. Gotta have the classic "she grabbed me by m'hand" story. Classic Roth at his best.
14 Buenos Aires, Argentina. Or preferrably Montevideo, Uruguay if they have it. Their most-played and best non-released cover.
15 San Bernardino, CA. Have to include the US Festival. Fan favorite that I chose over MS. Beginning with "I forgot the..."
16 US Festival again. Ending with "Let's go across the freeway and..." with the assless chaps.

1 New Haven, CT LWAN CD-only, because his best all-time solo needs to be audio as well. No need for video because they already released one.
2 New Halen again. They had to record this one for LWAN but it just didn't fit the VHS.
3 Tokyo, Japan since it was never put out.
4 Somewhere in '91 or '92 that isn't Fresno because we already have LRHRN.
5 Whatever city so that this tour is included. Gotta include at least one from each (but no '91-'92 either because of LRHRN's video release).
6 Toronto, Ontario, Canada from the Pay-Per-View that they, too, never put out
    7 Toronto, PPV again. It's 5150 time!
8 Sidney, Australia from MTV's "Live at the 10 Spot."
9 Sidney again. I also wanted Gary singing 1 Dave and 1 Sammy song, but there's no room. I'm all about sacrificing.
10 Wherever. Again, gotta include every tour.
11 New York, NY at Madison Square Garden. The other one they didn't release. Take a bow...
    12 Wherever.
    13 Wherever again.
14 Pick a place. Best deep-track there is. Needs to be on it.
15 Los Angeles, CA at the Hollywood Bowl. With the beautiful goodbye part courtesy of DLR (and since DTNA isn't on here video-wise).
16 Hollywood Bowl again. Ending it with the big one.

    III. 0515HV

This is what I'd call whatever Wolf puts out from the 5150 vaults some day. Obviously "VH5150" backwards. Yeah, I know, so clever--but just a placeholder. Whatever he wants from the "20 albums worth" or whatever number was quoted years ago and the more the better. Even if some or a lot of them are instrumentals.

    IV. 0515HV 2

In case he wants to do even more some day!

As I said, to keep the R&R theme, I was being hard on myself (without lubricant, mind you) by leaving out what I've always fantasized for decades so that this can actually and possibly see the light of day. I'd fuckin' do it if they'd call me up! No charge! I'll even throw in a Fernando Valenzuela rookie card because I know you guys are fans. Well I hope you're reading this, Alex, Wolfgang, Warner Bros., and maybe even Mike, Dave, Sammy, and Gary. And thank you Linkers for reading my ultimate VHL post ever, and I hope you did. I look forward to your feeback and making fun of me for taking the time to do this. Hey, I've always maintained I'm at least tied-for-first as the biggest VH fan in the galaxy. Amen.

P.S. For the record, I'd be happy with even 1 CD/DVD of a combination of all of the above.

You've listed some material from 82-85 that I never even heard of...lets hope that it sees the day of light.
"So the legacy of a band who is one of the greatest of all time will be stunted because of spoiled man-baby and his deranged mommy." - Brook

"when I heard Me Wise Magic on I-81 in 1996...I am thinking "what a fucking waste of time the last ten years were for Van Halen." - Dave's Dreidel

"It wasn't Ed's playing that inspired me, it was his spirit. The playing was merely a manifestation of that spirit." - Speedway

Anyways...

    Disc 1

You dared not to include the Gary-era track "Say Uncle?!?!" Shame on you, shame!!!!

Btw, I'd skip disk 1 since we already have all the songs.

I haven't listened much to VH, since Edward passed.

But, last night, i put on VH II, in it's entirety, as i always do.

    Man, were they fucking magical!

    Every song is just KILLER.

The opening HUGE chords to SGMAD.
That guitar tone was just perfection.

    Outta love, again...

Who else could come up with that?

Spanish Fly STILL sounds absolutely jaw dropping.
How can someone play an acoustic THAT fast & fluid, and still make it musical?
Graver, Walking Ed, refugee from CVH & proud tone chaser...

If you were serious, fuck it--nix "Miss You Much" for "Say Uncle." I'm with ya!

And disc 1 does have a few songs we don't have, but the others would sound a heck of a lot better and would be properly documented as they should be.

I'd be satisfied with them releasing Best of Volume 2 with two new tracks.

In only the Van Halen way that they could, how incomplete is it they never released volume 2.

In history has any band ever titled a record volume 1 and then not went on to release a volume 2.

    VH is that band.

Yes, but there was quite a bit of "best of" left off BOV1, such as YRGM. They could easily have gone back and added songs missed for Vol 1.

Love the effort put into this. Though it's probably more effort than Wolf or Al will be putting into a release anytime in the near future.

Hopefully we do get something (remember Al and Donn at the mastering studio a few weeks back). But I'm not sure anything besides the WB owned demos will see the light of day.

Oh, and Wolf mentioned on twitter that the ADKOT leftover ("Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Panama") was incomplete. Unless both Eddie and Dave finished their parts, which they likely didn't, I don't see that being a reality.

Serious ? They could have released volume 1 and 2 at the same time in 1996.
They had plenty of music already

Very impressive post. Appreciate your detailed analysis.

Personally, I'm sure there are the following:
    1. Unreleased legit versions of songs. For example, songs that (with Ted Templeman) were produced but later decided to be on a different album or not at all. I'm not talking the demo recordings we've all heard. But maybe they attempted producing Voodoo Queen prior to Mean Street, or Put out the lights before Beat's workin. We've all seen the letter regarding 1984 asking them to try again. We all know that was not the first time. Was Here's Just what you wanted recorded for VH1? Maybe they did it a couple times and scratched it? I'd like Al/Wolf to revisit those and maybe add where needed to make it something for us to listen to.

    2. Video. Are we really supposed to believe that we've seen all the video? Val never recorded any parts of any shows? The 3 Fair Warning videos were not 100% from those songs. If they are they really did a bad job piecing them together. Also, any back stage video? Really can't believe Wolfie that we've seen everything. It's possible he just doesn't know about other stuff but I can't believe it isn't out there. They came out in 1978, not 1958. And in 1984 are we really saying that the biggest band in the world at the time had no videos other than the Hot For Teacher live video and the backstage MTV during the Lost Weekend? Sorry, unbelievable. My bet is Ed was a perfectionist and never liked the video or his play that night. All speculation of course.

    3. THe hundreds of tapes in 5150. I can say that I'd like to hear Ed playing riffs and screwing around for a few minutes, playing songs years before released. But that could get old if it is just him screwing around at 3am. There will be thousands of hours of it. However, my bet is there is some stuff in there that is cool. But really I wouldn't want Al/Wolf to totally write a new song around it. I'd prefer Wolf to put it on a Mammoth WVH album and state that the riff was written by his Dad. It would suck if there are cool riffs and ideas in there that will never be heard. I'd love to hear, even if Wolfie uses them.
    Right here I say....

What is this between us two you refer to?

At this point, I'd be happy with.....anything. My expectations are so low as to be off the chart. I don't think we as fans rate at all with their stakeholders. Maybe in another 5 yrs they'll remaster the 6-pack again...
