Default Which Singer Has A Better Natural Tone?

I hope this remains civil, and I hope this doesn't get locked.

This thread is borne over a conversation that took place on FB last week...

Question: which singer's voice has a better natural tone? I am not referring to the singer's technical ability, nor do I speak to lyrics, nuance, etc.; I am talking about the pleasingness of the natural voice that they were born with. Example: Sinatra is not a good technical singer, but his voice has a breadth and warmth which attracted listeners to his performance.

For me, the choice is simple.

    What about for you?
"It wasn't Ed's playing that inspired me, it was his spirit. The playing was merely a manifestation of that spirit." - Speedway

"when I heard Me Wise Magic on I-81 in 1996...I am thinking "what a fucking waste of time the last ten years were for Van Halen." - Dave's Dreidel

"Eddie may have passed, but he will NEVER die!"

Switch the first guy for the third guy and then you have the correct order. You said tone, not personal preference. I am not an Extreme fan because they were lacking in the writing process, but Gary's voice is damn good.

Definitely Gary for me, I've always loved his tone. Sammy is a close second though.
"One of the reasons I left Sabbath was because Van Halen was blowing us off the stage every night. It was embarrassing." -Ozzy Osbourne

"When I first heard "Runnin' With The Devil" on the radio, I was stunned and found myself dizzy, walking through my high school hallways thinking, "What was THAT?!"
Eddie Van Halen was so innovative and kicked so much ass, and David Lee Roth was for a time indisputably the Greatest Man in America.
If aliens came down and challenged us to a Battle of the Bands to decide the fate of Planet Earth, I would feel very confident putting early Van Halen forward as our champion." -Tom Morello

"There is no heir to the throne of Eddie Van Halen. Nobody sits on that throne. Nobody takes that throne. Here's why it's different with Eddie: when a great guitar player passes, you just move on to another, right? But in this case, Eddie wasn't just a 'guitar player'. We're talking about a guy who changed culture and how we play guitar. He was like an alien coming in and fucking everything up so much that even the legends beforehand are like, 'Okay .. what is happening here? What sorcery is this?'" -Nuno Bettencourt

Sammy and Gary are better pure singers than Dave, but, IMO, Dave's voice and Ed's guitar were a match made in rock & roll heaven.

Tougher than I thought. Sam has way more range and as a result you can say his "tone" is more varied in breadth. Dave has a more limited range, but what he was able to do with it I found more pleasing to Ed's guitar sound and was greater in depth. Gary just didn't sound good with VH. At all. With Extreme he sounds more natural, but between live recordings and even live shows, Gary's voice just didn't mesh with VH's sound to my ears, so he comes in a distant last for me.
CNN may think my opinion matters, but you shouldn't.

Better tone or more pleasing to your ear? Both questions are listed and needs to be one or the other.

Most pleasing voice to my ear is Sammy while I still think Gary might have better tone. Best party rough around the edges voice is Dave.

Gary has a great voice, but I can't say his is my favorite as I don't care for Extreme and not a fan of Van Halen lll.

When it was revealed on the "Van Halen Unleashed" MTV Special in 1986 that Warner Brothers had considered replacing David Lee Roth with Sammy Hagar before the first Van Halen album was recorded, the following song was the first thing that popped into my head, and I thought to myself, "NFW would it have been as good without Dave's vocals" ...

"It's so lonely at the top because it's so crowded at the bottom" - Diamond David Lee Roth

"The truth sounds like hate to those who hate the truth" - Todd Wagner

To my ears, Dave is the clear winner of the 3 VH front men.

There was something about the swagger, and Rock n Roll edge, in Dave’s voice (I want to also mention the blend Dave had with Mikey here as well) along with Ed's brilliant guitar work, that made me a Huge Van Halen fan.
