I know this may be controversial but I never liked Al's solos. I never thought they were the equivalent of Ed's on guitar.

Now having said that, he is one of the best ever in rock. Where that is demonstrated is on the tracks themselves.

He's like Jeff Porcaro in that respect too. Groove master first. Soloist second but I agree. Buddy Rich owns the solo.

I think Alex is a fantastic soloist. Nobody can be Buddy Rich but Alex was always improving. It's so odd to me how so many people seem to skip over the Hagar era nowadays. Irregardless of the singer, Alex, Eddie and Mike got better and better over the years. maybe it wasn't so spontaneous and driven the way it was in the early years but those three gelled like no other. That became no more clear to me when I saw the III tour. I already knew it but watching those three lock in was just so incredible. I remember leaving that show (saw them at the Fleet center in Boston), and thinking that they were the best trio of musicians in rock. Not to discount Gary but I was just floored with how well Eddie, Alex and Mike played that night. Year to the Day was especially moving to me as those guys grooved like an old blues band. It was awesome to say the least.

As for Alex, I think his solos have always been great but in terms of technique, I think the reached the top around 1993-1995. The solo he does on the Balance PPV is incredible. There is a lot of technical stuff going on there and Alex was like a well oiled machine at that point. Being a drummer and a lifelong AVH fan certainly can give me some bias but I think Alex has a lot more technical skill and chops than given credit for. Above all of that technical ability though comes first and foremost his feel and sound. It's the same with Eddie. The two of them had some old school soul to them that just can't be replicated. They needed each other to sound the way they did.

Just listen to the clip of Eddie playing Panama on David Letterman in 1985. Steve Jordan (who is an awesome drummer) is in the backing band and the song sounds nothing like it should without Alex.
"What do you expect from a guy who makes his living beating things with a stick!"-EVH

Not controversial. Drum solos are bathroom breaks, even for the great Neil Peart.
If I don't respond to you it means I have you on ignore, which means you are a douchenozzle.

Some pretty good drumming by the Reverend Al on this one ...
