Default THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE HALLOWEEN: INSANE EARLY VAN HALEN SET FROM 1977

THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE HALLOWEEN: INSANE EARLY VAN HALEN SET FROM 1977

We try to look like the music sounds.

    —David Lee Roth, 1977

After leaving their disco pimping days as the house band for LA rock club Gazzarri’s back in the late 70s Van Halen would go on to play the Pasadena Civic Auditorium on nearly a monthly basis to thousands of enthusiastic air guitarists and other awestruck fans before exploding into mega-stardom.

The audio from this performance recorded on October 15th, 1977—VH’s last at the PCA—will send chills down your spine as the quality is nearly beyond compare.

As are the ear-piercing vocals of David Lee Roth that team up seamlessly with the on-point brightness of backing vocals from bassist Michael Anthony (a sound I sorely miss since Anthony departed VH).

Here’s Van Halen’s manager Marshall Berle (nephew of comedian Milton Berle) echoing my feelings about one of the band’s performances at the PCA in a quote from the 2011 book by photographer Neil Zlozwer’s on guitar mangler and musical virtuoso, Eddie Van Halen:

The lights went down and the announcer introduced Van Halen and the kids went nuts and started screaming.

They started playing and the hair on the back of my neck stood up. I got a chill right through my bones. I had never seen anything like this in my life.

These guys were so good I almost crapped my pants. I thought “what the fuck is this?”

While listening to this I honestly felt like Van Halen was kicking it right in my living room the sound is that fucking good.

The recording of the legendary (and often misdated) show includes eleven songs plus the audio recordings of the rehearsals that led up to this sonic assault coined in this case “The Nightmare Before Halloween.”

The show was of course bootlegged many times over the years and released with fitting titles like Last Pasadena Eruption or Pasadena on Fire so if you don’t already have a copy of it have no fear as they are pretty easy to come by on auction sites like eBay and musically inclined commerce sites.

I can’t recommend enough that this be listened to at the highest possible volume.

Fuck your neighbors—stay calm and listen to Van Halen!

Cool to hear some of the subtle differences to ones recorded a few months later.

For them to start with ‘On Fire’ was perfect because this band was.

Imagine it's 1978, you haven't heard VH yet, and you are going to a show to hear a slow, plodding funeral dirge in Black Sabbath, and then these fuckers jump out, playing On Fire and running all over the joint.

We have all forgotten what a seismic shit they were in 1978, no one played like them live...no one.

The pasadena civic center shows were insane. Edward played so fast I thought the tape was sped up a little but I think it was just youth and good coke.

I found this show on YouTube about 3 yrs ago, after I heard it's live version of D.O.A. on Sirius. It's an amazing show, and the quality is superb. Still has my all time favourite version of ATBL

It’s ironic how the best sounding CVH boots are from 77/78.

I have a few on vinyl.

I had one dear friend rip who went to see Black Sabbath on that tour in Baltimore one night 44 years ago. I did not get a first hand account for a while but what he said to me basically is what has now become legend in the business. They simply stole the show night after night all over the USA. No internet no twitter just word of mouth and a hand of FM stations at the time. If something like that happened now it would be mobs of people breaking the doors down and added shows asap with them opening and playing 2 sets.
    10-6-2020 RIP King of sixstrings.

Can't believe it has been almost 20 years (2004) since our man WOODA released the definitive version of this show and clarified the correct date of 12/15/77. Some great times at DDLR.com in the bootleg forum.

That's funny because the old tape I have of this exact show says it is at The Pasadena Civic on New Years Eve of 1977.

    This is their concert archive of '77, and this show was apparently recorded 15 OCT, however they did play the Pasadena Civic on 20 DEC also;
