Default Wolfgang Van Halen Didn't Always Want to Be a Musician

Loudwire's Lauryn Schaffner talks with Wolfgang Van Halen, whose band Mammoth WVH is our 2021 Artist of the Year.

We talk about the group's recent Grammy nomination, their tour with GunsNRoses and internet trolls.
Beauty is life when life unveils
    her holy face.

But you are life and you
    are the veil.

Beauty is eternity gazing at itself
    in a mirror.

    But you are eternity
    and you are the mirror.

    -Kahil Gibran

He obviously doesn't want to play his father's music live but playing Panama, Hot For Teacher, or even Without You is keeping your father's legacy and memory alive. I get it you want it to be about your music but if you played Panama it would be 100% for your father. I hope eventually one day he realizes this but he obviously doesn't want to be pigeon holed as an artist at the moment. Either way there is no escaping that your Ed's son Wolfie.

Every kid who plays video games thinks that it would be cool to develop them for a living. Then, like Wolf, they learn what the process is and it isn't as appealing. No one likes to see the sausage made.

Very good analogy about the sausage.

The fact this is even a topic of discussion in an interview is fairly ridiculous.

There’s shitty people on the Internet. This has been established. Wolf’s Dad is EVH. There’s going to be people who say nothing but, “Play Panama” or god forbid, shitty people that say something more disrespectful.

    Move on, man.

I'm sure Mick Jagger spends his time going after his detractors on Twitter.

By going after them, he is giving them exactly what they want, and he's smart enough to know that.
If I don't respond to you it means I have you on ignore, which means you are a douchenozzle.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

I'm glad to hear that he will be playing all of the instruments on the second album as well; I really enjoy his work.

He could've been a TV sitcom actor too. Following his mom's footsteps. ( Valerie Bertinelli. One Day At A Time & Hot In Cleveland).

Not sure that possibility is mentioned very often. I think he made the right choice. Although if he gets sick of the music business he could switch to acting. I'm sure he has his Mom's gene's too. Double Whammy.

Mick Jagger has to make sure actual trolls don't overrun his chateau in France. Fact.

No. He is not Ed, and sounds nothing like Ed on guitar. His voice is also nothing like any of the 3 VH singers. It would sound nothing like VH. Terrible idea.

Maybe he'll see it that way in the future once he's more established.

I wonder if Mick Jagger even knows Twitter exists.

Wolf is part of a generation that grew up with social media and it is a part of his life, so he's going to be on it regardless. Wolf didn't really engage with the haters until the last few years. He took a lot of abuse early on and never responded and people have said some pretty vile things. They never went away, and even if he didn't respond to it now they would still be doing it (as evidenced by the fact he didn't engage them and they never stopped). From that perspective I understand why he's decided to engage them and shine a light on their behavior. Some of his retorts are genuinely funny. Some read as more defensive, but it's always hard to read context in a short tweet. I say a lot of things that are in complete sarcasm, but without context it sounds like I'm being cranky.

Either way, I'm glad Wolf has some good people around him and helps keep those baiting him in perspective. It's hard to know how any of us would react if we had people telling us we're awful every single day, but I suspect I wouldn't handle it as gracefully as he does.
CNN may think my opinion matters, but you shouldn't.

I understand him not playing any of that stuff right now. He wants to establish himself with his own music. Totally get that.

A few years from now? I could see him breaking out Unchained or something, at least in a jam. After all...dude was IN the band Van Halen. He played on a studio album. It's not like he was just covering Mike's parts that entire time.
I asked a ref if he could give me a technical foul for thinking bad things about him. He said, of course not. I said, well, I think you stink. And he gave me a technical. You can't trust em. -

I think too much is made by Wolf about this. There are relatively very few folks that "go after him" that he interacts with, but the few that do get a lot of attention when he responds.

But now it's reported that "VH fans give Wolf a hard time" when that's not remotely true.

It's more like "A very few random idiots give Wolf a hard time and he blows their actions out of proportion by acknowledging them"
