Seems like a decent amp. Sounds and looks pretty solid.

Turn the gain down a touch...

I'll bet they built a 5150 Overdrive pedal, right into this amp, "Overdrive Engaged"...look out!

i know you guys are stuck in 1982, but boosting a high gain amp with a overdrive is standard business in metal. it cuts the low end so you can down tune and stay audible. yeah, i like to use a little less gain too on these things but this sounds fine and would be a great backup for when you need an amp in a pinch for cheap.

it has a built in noise gate too, i know you guys love dealing with hiss and feedback because thatís how they did it in the old days, but those of us who just want to play the fucking guitar, this will be a nice cheap little piece of gear. perfect for the modern metal scene that is dominant today, iím glad evh makes gear for the needs of today and not the past.

It doesn't matter if you are using down tunings guitar wise.

The rules of the audible spectrum don't change at all with modern metal or any genre, and how FOH guys will mix a band. You have the full spectrum (20Hz-20kHz) to create a useable mix with EQ, Comp, and harmonic enhancement. Gain levels within a guitar signal have nothing to do with it.

Just create/take space in the upper mids and use different types of compression properly.

Also, basically spend money on your FOH board/gear.

I don't know why everybody keeps complaining about the amount of laundry detergent in the signal of this amplifier.

Based on that vid, James Brown did some bad ass work for that thing.

I'd love to try one in person.

The amount of gain on ADKOT could've been cut in half and Ed's tone would've been stellar.

But for this demo? I think this is about right. It's aiming at either a younger crowd that's into the higher gain. For me personally, I don't get much use out of a demo with this much gain though.

So, by this logic, a metal player could use a Strat directly through a Fender Deluxe Reverb and it will not change how the FOH mixes that metal band?

    Am I reading that correctly?

If you have nothing nice to say about Eddie Van Halen, you're at the right website. - Me (A few years ago)

"People take Van Halen much more seriously than we do" - David Lee Roth (1980's)

"I don't sit on the end of your bed while you're trying to make a living" - David Lee Roth (1988)

"For some reason people love to complain about everything. The internet has made it easy for people to do that. Shut the fuck up and get a life, or show me how good you can do it."- Edward Van Halen

"A lot of people ask me which Van Halen singer was better. You can't compare them. It's like asking which guitarist is better. Nobody is better than anybody. Every player is their own person."-Edward Van Halen

"I do like Eddie Van Halen as a player. He gets it right quite often." -Paul McCartney

if you guys really want to be obtuse boomers about this fine, but every modern metal band takes a 5150 and boosts it with a tube screamer derivative. itís funny you would talk to me like i donít do this for my gig, mr. noise next door. i would guarantee you would sound like shit playing what i have to play while i would sound good, because i know what iím talking about. also, if you think foh at a club can magically make tone it shows me you donít gig out much. my tone is my responsibility and i wouldnít dare as a professional depend on some drunk coked out dipshit with shot ears to clean up the low end enough when i can easily use my pedal that tightens up the whole amp and gives the character i need to play that genre.

if you want a plexi, go buy a suhr.

Settle down with the name calling.

Eddie has gone on record saying he doesn't like or use overdrive pedals, you should get your gain from amps. Brad Paisley has gone on record saying whammy bars are for sissies and if you want to dive the pitch you should bend the neck. They've both missed out on cool tones/sounds by being closed to other approaches.

Boosting ain't my cup o' tea, but I'm not playing metal. It's a staple for that genre, but it's not for me. Whether boosted or not FOH will absolutely make or break your tone, there's no denying that.

Now back to the Iconic...the Riffs 'n Beards demo sounds significantly better than the official EVH demo. But neither of them make me want this amp. It's just not for me. The standard 5150iii 6L6 does basically everything I want in an amp.

Based on these demos, it sounds like it's a legit amp and deserving of the EVH badge. Sounds very close to the OG Peavey 5150, and I think it is a very good representation of that amp. That being said, I probably wouldn't run out and buy one. Not because I think it's a bad amp, but because it sounds too much like an amp that I've already had and decided the tone of that amp wasn't for me (OG Peavey 5150) Although, I think that this version is infinitely more useable on the clean side than the OG.

I've found that I prefer the 5150III tone, and more specifically, the 5150III, LBXII. I really like the voicing of the Blue channel on that head, as well as having a clean channel that covers a lot of territory. Plenty of volume for gigging and great tone for the type of music I play.

I think the Iconic will make a great metal amp for guys who play that type of music.

I'm stuck in 1980 actually, LOL!
For my tastes, Edward was using way too much chorus, and modulators in '82

But you are right, this amp does sounds perfect, if you're chugety chugging away in drop D, over and over, all day, and all night.
That gets a little old, IMHO.
And yes, the built in noise gate does come in handy, when you're squealing and feed backing like crazy (because of the excessive gain, maybe?)
The real trick is learning to control feed back, as Edward did.
    Have fun with it!
