Ed's never said how he got the idea for the stripes, as far as I know. Most recently he would just says that he couldn't remember. Which always came off like he knew but didn't want to say. At least to me, it did.

No reason to think Dave is just making this up.

Yeah idk..I doubt Ed cared what a guitar looked like, but we'll probably never know

Next we'll learn that Dave composed Eruption. I ain't buying it. Sammy Hagar is not the only VH frontman to play fast and loose with the truth.

I dont believe for a second and never have that Ed came up with the stripes himself.

Now, whether he got the idea from seeing a movie or from the binding process for Gibsons or some other guitar player or Dave, is another matter.

Personally, I believe Roth. The guitars were striped while Dave and Ed were growing up together and in the same band. Reasonable to assume that Dave could have helped Eddie make it happen.

The Frankenstein began as black. And then white. And then red.

    Correct... That's the proper order.

Once you figure it out it's pretty easy, but there's a process to it. I used the design on a toilet seat that I painted for a Dirty Santa™ gift exchange. That thing made the rounds in our circle for 4 Christmas' until some guy got it and installed it in his house... LOL.

Can’t dismiss Roth’s claim. Doubt he would lie about something related to EVH at this point. Sure wish we had a guitar-focused book from Rudy…

If anyone recalls the time I met DLR at the Houston Grand Opera, posted on the VHND.. I was asked by his manager Gery to remove my EVH striped tie. She went in great detail on his negative feelings toward ED and the Red/White/Black stripes at the time. It was awkward, it was black tie event, people were around, and I was like for real? I need to take my tie off? If I had known better I would have never worn it, and would have had more time to chat with DLR. He was polite and shook my hand, but the stripes just about ruined that moment. I did put the tie back on before he came out to sing, and I stood right in front of him wearing it.. LOL

He was just trying to protect Ed's Trademark.

I think DLR was just sharing a story about the early days, not trying to take credit, at least that is how I interpreted it.

Seems pretty clear that Dave is laying a claim, even if partial, to the stripes.
And if you listen carefully at what Dave's saying, there's a reason for it. I think in the old days, EVH didn't make any money from the stripes. Even the EBMM and Wolfgang didn't have stripes. Then in the 2000s, Ed, or someone in his entourage, realized that the stripes were a design worth money, that could be applied for other stuff. They started to market other items with the stripes - Dave mentions this in the interview, "they're making sneakers." And then he politely says "Ed was always a better businessman than I was." Which is a strange quote, because yes, Ed launched his gear brand, but he's also made some bad business decisions.
If Dave had said "Sammy is a better business man" - ok, no contest.
I think from what Dave has said in fairly recent interview, the quote about "I watched my money walk into someone else's pocket" - he does have the feeling that for a musician of his stature, he should've made a lot more money. I mean Dave still lives in his dad's house. Granted, it's a very nice and large house, but other rock stars have multiple mansions in different cities. Dave wrote a number one hit - still played all over the world to this day on the radio. Bad management, bad record deals, etc have hurt his revenue.

You are reading an awful lot into it.

He's just telling a story and not laying claim to anything.

how does it not make sense, he always talked about painting shit and low riders for the past 50 years. it’s more unbelievable Edward just magically thought of it. Van Halen was DLR’s band first and foremost, it’s look was shaped in his image. Sammy is the luckiest man in the world walking into what Dave built, Edward was pretty lucky he kept it together for so long without Dave but Van Halen might as well been called Diamond Dave’s Mammoth.

    It was his band.

I believe him about the RWTD solos too. Edward would have listened to Dave.

Of all the mother fuckers on earth, DLR is the only one i’d believe who would say he didn’t do this for the money.
