It's cool to hear this in more detail. I remember reading Dave commenting on this some time ago. It was just a brief comment at the time. But, having all the blanks filled in is fantastic and makes so much sense in hindsight.

    Cool story.

I think some things are a bit off but its 45 years, lots of coke, JD and time. However considering how much Dave was an influence on their style, I would be surprised he didn't have any influence on the stripes. Just cool to hear him talk about that era with fondness and that he and Alex still talk

Yeah not buying this story. Ed has NEVER said to my knowledge that Dave invented the Stripes.

I can buy it. Whenever asked about the paintjob, Ed was always very vague and light on any details. Even his story of building the guitar was HIGHLY truncated. He always made it sound like he bought the parts, and in a few days, voila! We now know that isn't the case. That guitar went through a number of neck, pickup, pickguard combinations before it became what we know. If Al, or Rudy, or anyone there at the time contradicts this, so be it. But, Dave wouldn't be saying this at this point without Al's thumbs-up.

I always thought Ed was light on the details because he didn’t want anybody ripping him off, not because someone else came up with it.

long story short they saw the guy in the punk band with the les paul with tape on it and ran with it. everyone likes the stripes, it was probably a group effort idea because it looked bad ass. they obviously respected the punk scene and took ideas from it, just like they did with disco and whatever else.

if you play Dave’s vocal melodies on guitar they sound like EVH licks. they were pretty fucking intertwined.

What was the name of that punk band? Was it the Cramps?

It was the Dills' guitar player Chip Kinman.

Whether true or not, it's an entertaining story.....I also found Dave's frank comment about Ed's business acumen rather revealing as well as his last point about Ed making it what it became.

I think what people need to realize that in 1976 or whatever all you have are some bands on the strip playing gigs. Rock, Punk, Glam, etc. They were not looking at things like "well how will people perceive me in 2021" It was no different than some of us in 1982 or something when 80's fashion was taken over. You simply roll with it. Electric tape being on the body or equipment was a thing in punk. VH was around that scene. I don't think one time VH was walking in the woods and came across a pond. The Lady of the Lake suddenly lifted up a guitar from the depths with the pattern, etc for Eddie to pick up.

Plus when you think about it, when was Eddie into style? Only until Dave came aboard. So its kind of likely that he may have had some influence on the design on the guitar.

Randy Rhoads loved polka dots. Why? I don't know but I assume that he didn't take them from Buddy Guy but from the glam scene. A year later Phil Collin who met Randy and played with Ozzy was using polka dots in Def Leppard. Part of a fashion trend and not because he was stealilng from Randy.

David Lee Roth detailed how he helped conceive the design for Eddie Van Halen’s iconic Frankenstrat guitar.

The frontman recently shared a painting titled “Big Wave,” which fans apparently thought bore a resemblance to Van Halen’s signature red, white and black Fender Stratocaster.

On Friday, Roth uploaded a video to YouTube in which he explained that the similarities were not coincidental.

"We've been getting a lot of cards and letters — digitally, so to speak — in regards to the fact that there's similarities between my work and the stripes on Eddie's guitar, and that's because it's my work," Roth began.

He then reminisced about walking into band practice circa 1975 or 1976 with a roll of gray duct tape, black electrician’s tape and blue art tape, all of which would prove instrumental in the design of the Frankenstrat.

Roth said Van Halen’s guitar was originally white and “eerily reminiscent of Jimi Hendrix.”

He suggested the guitarist implement an “expanding linear pattern” to differentiate his axe from that of Hendrix, whose 1970 death was still fresh in people’s minds.

“We laid it down and kaboom. Within like four minutes, I laid it out,” Roth continued.

He said the “little squiggle” on the guitar body came from the black electrician’s tape, which quickly pulled as Van Halen worked up a sweat while performing “five 45-minute sets a night.”

To combat the pulling of the tape, Van Halen instead opted to “spray paint the guitar and pull the tape, like pin-striping a low-rider,” creating a “half-tone version” of the body akin to a negative of a photograph.

“Essentially — I say with a great big sense of humor — I invented coffee, they invented a cup,” Roth joked.

The singer said Van Halen later added colors to the Frankenstrat and recalled stopping at a “famous truck stop” in San Bernardino, Calif.

“I came back with one of those little bubble convex mirrors and a couple little red reflectors and said, ‘Cherry on top,’” he remembered.

Roth said Van Halen’s guitar tech, Rudy Leiren, gave each version of the burgeoning Frankenstrat a name.

“The very first name, I don’t recollect. It may well have been Frankenstein,” he said.

The singer also said his former bandmate "developed an industry" with his guitar design.

“Eddie was way better at business than I have ever been,” Roth confessed. “They started an industry. It’s not just a franchise. It’s a way of thinking about guitar.

It’s one of the most recognizable symbols of all time in the sport in this regard here.”

Roth made sure to emphasize that his idea for the Frankenstrat was merely a kernel, which Van Halen brought to fruition.

“Somebody somewhere said, ‘Wouldn’t it be easier…’ which is Latin for, ‘Spray paint the motherfucker and pull the tape,’” he joked.

“That design wouldn’t have gone anywhere without Eddie sending it and giving it the shape and shine that it did. I’m just proud to have been part of it. The first part.”
