Default 5150III combo impedance and tubes questions

    Hi guys,

I have the 5150III el34 1x12 combo - what is the correct setting for the impedance switch using just the stock 1x12 speaker? I thought it was 16 but have just had a look round the back and seen it’s set to 8. Any help or advice on this from fellow combo owners much appreciated!

Second question… I’m swapping out the V1 tube, but despite taking the back off the amp it looks quite hard to get to. Is there a way to remove the chassis to easier get to it, or is it just a case of having to try and reach around the output transformer?

    Thanks for any help!

depends what speaker is in there. my guess would be an 8 ohm celestion
you could take back off and check what speaker to be 100 percent sure, single speaker makes it easy. just match the speaker.
I'm guessing 16 so if you added another cab in parallel it would then be 8.
two 16 in parallel make 8. two 8 in series make 16.

It should be a 16. My 5150-3 is put on 16 with no issues. Only issue is when you put other cabs on

The manual confirms that the speaker is 16 ohm. You should set the amp to 16 ohm if you're not hooked up to any other cabs.

I don't own a combo, so I don't have any advice on the tube access. With the heads it's obviously easier to access the tubes by taking off the front panel. Not sure if the front grill pops out easily or if it is affixed permanently.

It’s easy to change tubes. I wouldn’t though. But it’s easy.

    Thanks for the help guys!

I’ve switched it to 16 ohms, and I’ve managed to swap out V1 for a JJ ECC82 (12AU7).

The tube swap really helps tame the whole amp, but the best thing is I can now turn the gain on the green channel pretty much full up and it stays clean, so it’s way easier to balance with the other channels. I used to have to keep the gain at 12:00 to keep it clean, but of course it sounds quite thin there - at 02:00 it starts to really fill out and sound nice and fat. A cheap and effective mod. Recommended!
