SAMMY HAGAR: 'I Have No Problem With DAVID LEE ROTH'

Former VAN HALEN frontman Sammy Hagar says that he has "no problem" with the band's original singer, David Lee Roth.

The 74-year-old Red Rocker, who just kicked off his Las Vegas residency, discussed his relationship with Roth in a new interview with "The Mike & Carla Morning Show" on the 96.3 KKLZ radio station.

He said "Him and I don't even have a feud. To be honest with you, I have no problem with Dave.

I don't know what he's got going with me, but I think he always feels competitive. I think he feels like he has to raise his flag, like, 'I'm VAN HALEN.'

'Cause I had a solo career before VAN HALEN. I was in MONTROSE before VAN HALEN. I've had CHICKENFOOT.

Dave has got VAN HALEN, so I think he has to hold on to that kind of tight. But I don't care about that.

If someone said, 'Oh, I never knew you were in VAN HALEN,' I'd say, 'Eh…'"

Hagar replaced Roth in VAN HALEN in 1985 and recorded four studio albums with the band — "5150", "OU812", "For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge" and "Balance" — all of which topped the U.S. charts.

The highest-charting Roth-led VAN HALEN album was a No. 2, and it took until "1984" to achieve that. (2012's "A Different Kind Of Truth" also landed at No. 2.)

I love Sam and the Sammy Halen years, but I've had to start ignoring some of Sam's blathering about Dave so I can still enjoy the man. Sam, you were awesome in Van Halen. Guess what? So was Dave. Here's your answer next time somebody asks you about Dave: "Dave was awesome in Van Halen. I'm grateful I got to be part of that band, and I gave the fans my best and I think I did pretty good."

Truth is that they all felt competitive. Sam, Dave, Ed. This is what gave us superior quality music. EEAS and then OU812 - competition. Vai was challenging Ed in guitar magazine reader's poll. When they stopped being competitive, we got way less music. Competition is good.

These interviewers have one job. To get clicks and traffic to their article. They’d be doing their publication a disservice not asking a guy like Sam this stuff.

Nobody gives a shit to read Sam talking about the “new single off his Lockdown Sessions album” or his new line of beach sandal.

Sam talking about VH brings traffic, as evidenced here. We’re talking about it.

Maybe Sam is sympathetic to that and wants to give them what they want/need?

Either way, if it was me I’d just say, ”Look, I’ve said everything I’ve needed to say about Dave before. I’m done talking about the guy. So, unfortunately you’re not gonna get a juicy soundbyte or headline out of me. Sorry.”


And Rogan is a different animal because he gets more hits than all these online publications do combined probably. He doesn’t need Dave to talk about Eddie to get traffic. He gets traffic just by posting.
