Yeah, it's always annoyed me that DD gets so disrespected. There is absolutely more good than bad on the album .. Where Have All The Good Times Gone, Hang Em High, Secrets, Little Guitars, Big Bad Bill, and The Full Bug are all gems. Hell, I even enjoy Happy Trails wrapping it up at the end.
"One of the reasons I left Sabbath was because Van Halen was blowing us off the stage every night. It was embarrassing." -Ozzy Osbourne

"When I first heard "Runnin' With The Devil" on the radio, I was stunned and found myself dizzy, walking through my high school hallways thinking, "What was THAT?!"
Eddie Van Halen was so innovative and kicked so much ass, and David Lee Roth was for a time indisputably the Greatest Man in America.
If aliens came down and challenged us to a Battle of the Bands to decide the fate of Planet Earth, I would feel very confident putting early Van Halen forward as our champion." -Tom Morello

"A lot of bands mature, which means they get square; they start delivering messages. Hey, you got a message, use Western Union." -DLR

I love Diver Down. I just love the debut, II, WACF, FW and 1984 more.

To me, there is no bad to it, and it's a fun listen.

Due to the cover songs it's just not their highest quality output from an artistic point of view.

The only negative about Diver Down was it was the impetus for EVH turning his racquetball court into 5150, which hastened DLRís departure from the band.

The 4 OGs on DD blow doors on anything off II or 1984

I agree with the exception of a few tunes:

    Light Up The Sky
    House of Pain
    Girl Gone Bad

I must concede that Girl Gone Bad and HFT exceed the 4 DD originals.

Actually, I think GGB perhaps exceeds all that precedes it, aside from Fair Warning, On Fire, ITO, LG, and IASR.

SGMAD and especially LUTS exceed the 4 DD originals.

Diver Down was rushed, the band wasn't ready and so, with all the covers, it's not quite up to par with the others in the 6-pack.

And those 4 originals off DD are not better than SGMAD, LUTS, Panama, TJ, DDL, HFT, GGB, or HOP. Just my opinion, though.

I always listened to my brother's Van Halen records up through Fair Warning. When Diver Down was released my Mom bought me a boom box and one cassette tape for my birthday, and I chose Diver Down. It was my first VH purchase. I remember thinking that it was a very different Van Halen album than the ones before, but I quickly established favorites: WHATGTG, Hang 'em High, Little Guitars, Big Bad Bill, and The Full Bug. I appreciated Dancing in the Streets. I know some of you guys freak out over Secrets, but I never got into it. Looking back, I have fond memories of this record, and Hang 'em High and The Full Bug rank among my top 15 Van Halen tunes.

I'm not the biggest fan of Secrets, either.

I can see why people like it. It's unique for a band like VH.

Just doesn't do much for me.

The only songs from VH II that I might agree are not as good as the 4 originals off DD are You're No Good and maybe Women In Love. VH II, as a whole, smokes DD, as a whole. So does 1984.

DD is my favorite record. Little Guitars, Secrets are my favorite VH songs and WHATGTG is my favorite cover. If you got rid of Dancing in the Street it would be perfect.

I think I like Dancing In The Street more than WHATGTG and (Oh) Pretty Woman. I dig Secrets and Little Guitars is the highlight of Diver Down.
