Ugh .. right? Unreal that Ed's musical direction could have changed so dramatically in just 2 years, from that period in '96, to '98 when VH3 was released. What a travesty. smh.
"One of the reasons I left Sabbath was because Van Halen was blowing us off the stage every night. It was embarrassing." -Ozzy Osbourne

"When I first heard "Runnin' With The Devil" on the radio, I was stunned and found myself dizzy, walking through my high school hallways thinking, "What was THAT?!"
Eddie Van Halen was so innovative and kicked so much ass, and David Lee Roth was for a time indisputably the Greatest Man in America.
If aliens came down and challenged us to a Battle of the Bands to decide the fate of Planet Earth, I would feel very confident putting early Van Halen forward as our champion." -Tom Morello

Proof that DLR and Sam, and to a lesser degree Ted Templeman were kind of important.
If I don't respond to you it means I have you on ignore, which means you are a douchenozzle.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

I don't think it didn't. It depends who was singing. Plus, a lot of Ed's playing was somewhat unorthodox. Listen to one of the guitarist he looked up to in Allan Holdsworth. Allan played the instrument in a progressive style. Now if they went with Dave I can guarantee you he would not have gone in that direction.

We don't want to rile up the "it was all about Ed" gang. Wait. Are they all gone now?
