Default Eruption: Conversations with Eddie Van Halen

I didn't see a thread for this but mind you I haven't been around much at all lately. I just finished reading this, and it's fantastic. most interesting to me was the interviews with Gary Cherone and Ray Danniels, it provided a lot of context for their time with the band. Mike Anthony had some really interesting things to say as well. It's a shame Alex and Sammy weren't interviewed though.

The one thing that thematically kept coming up was the failure of VH 3 and how it apparently crushed EVH. Seems the authors/interviewers blame that nearly as much for Ed's health and addiction problems for why he was inactive for so long after it bombed. Anyway, I'd consider the book a must have for any hardcore fan, sorry if this was already posted elsewhere.

I've been listening to the audiobook version and I agree, it's fantastic. I've learned a few things, have been reminded of others, and am really impressed at what a thorough picture of Edward it paints.

Gary and Ray Danniels' perspectives are very enlightening, in a hindsight-is-20/20 kind of way. One of the more interesting things that Ray Danniels said was that he negotiated a new deal with WB for four or five more albums that would have paid them a lot of money regardless of how well they sold.

On the other hand, it was disappointing to read another post-ADKOT interview with Ed where he throws someone under the bus - in this case, he tries to put the blame on Ted Templeman for Michael McDonald not getting the songwriting credit on "I'll Wait".

Yeah I didn't care for that, and Ted clarified that in his book with Greg. I used to so angry with EVH for saying such false or hurtful things, but the guy was an addict and it wasn't ever shocking

I was led to believe the book was just rehashed interviews from past guitar magazines.

Holy shit, did you guys read the interview of the writer Chris Gill with the VHND:

"I remember meeting with Eddie and his wife Janie and learning they were getting back together with Michael Anthony, but I couldn't tell anybody."

    DAMN

Now that's news! Maybe even to Mike himself!!!!
So back in 2019, EVH had decided that mike was gonna come back. We knew there was a rumor, but this is pretty solid evidence.

My understanding is that they had gotten to the point in planning what the tour route would be, then Ed has a stroke while riding his motorcycle, and that is when they discovered the brain cancer, and that was that.

True, but I wasn't sure if Nuno had misheard. If Ed told a well-known music journalist, in front of Janie, then to me that makes it real. The really WEIRD thing is that he never told the most important person, Mike himself. Mike only heard from management.

Well, they never told Mike he was out of the band, either. Mike found out about that on the internet.

What they're saying is that in early 2019, Ed had finally let go of all past grudges and was in a more positive mindset, better than he had been since before the whole VHIII thing. They call his dark period the "Lost Years."
