100% agree. Donn was the fall guy. He didn't all of a sudden forget how to mix an album.

I know there are posters who don't like the mix on VH II, but just listen to Mike's bass lines during the last minute of this ...

Yes, a sign of the times, 1988, but still, it is what it is, and they canned him for it.
OU812 was recorded by Landee, it was a band produced effort from what I recall.

Difference is, Ed admitted that the lowered bass was a mistake. And brought in Andy Johns with a clear mission to restore the bass on FUCK. Balance also had a more audible bass than on the late 80s VH records.

I remember hearing that Landee retired after that album more or less. I donít think it was a firing per se.

He built the 5150 studio. His relationship with Ed broke down. He wasn't old. But left the business. It's a huge waste of talent. The only solace is the knowledge that at the end of his life, Ed reconnected with Donn.

I think Ed tried something sonically on OU812 in 88. Then regreted it. But he didnt want to come out and say "I screwed up." So he put the blame on Landee. That's my educated guess.

    It was just the trend.

Hell, if Metallica can forget where the bass knob is, anyone can.

Kind of like the noise wars where everything got clipped. Later on, people look at the time period and think "WTF was everyone thinking?"

5150 and OU812 were victims of the time. Bass? Nope didn't need that in hard rock or metal. Listen to all the popular albums of that era and you would be hard press to hear good bass tones. Drums? Electronic drums were en vogue because it was new tech. Even the patches Eddie used on his OB8 were due to the era. Had these albums been recorded in 78 or 92, different results. Eddie changed one of the best recorded tones in hard rock simply due to the music trends in the 80's.

Just imagine if 5150 and OU812 had the guitar tone from any of the 6 pack? Even with Diver Down which I think is the weakest it would have sounded better. However he fell in love with his Bradshaw rig because he wanted to be with the times.

I am sure Donn likely didn't really get it but he was drawing a salary from the band. So he had to be a bit of a yes man. However it easily could have been Donn saying "Hey Eddie, this is what the big rage is right now, lets try something different" Even EEAS doesn't sound liie anything from the 6 pack and last time I checked, Eddie wasn't involved in that. Ted solely was with Dave.

Maiden never followed the no bass trend.

When you're a gangster like Harris is.

Can you imagine telling The Ox "Hey dude, there's this awesome trend whereby we turn your bass down in the mix. What do you think"?

I would disagree with you on EEAS.

EEAS sounds different because it's a totally different band, not because Ted forgot how to produce an album. That is a very well produced album, the problem is Vai's tone, but to my ears, the mix is great, the bass is there, and DLR sounds great.
