But I love DD. Little Guitars is the quintessential California rock song.

DD was was always the take it or leave it album out of the 6 pack for me. Everybody calls it a "Summer" record. I never saw it that way. That would have been VHII for me.. I dint hate DD by any stretch though. Only 2 songs have had longevity for me and that's LG and Secrets.

These are my exact sentiments around Diver Down. I barely ever listen to it apart from seeking out Little Guitars or Secrets. It's not a bad album, it just doesn't stick for some reason?

I love it right along with the rest of the 6 pack. I know I'm one of the few around here who likes Dancing in the Street, so that must help, but The Full Bug, Big Bad Bill, Where Have All The Good Times Gone... Hang 'Em High!! - all sooo good, right along with the 2 you mentioned. It's a GREAT Van Halen album, and that's my final answer.

iím not saying 1984 is bad or sounds bad in any sense itís my favorite VH album but there isnít bass. there are a lot of high hats for sure. itís more akin to 5150 and OU812 since it was made in the first iteration of the studio on the same equipment by the same people. it just doesnít make sense to praise the sound of 1984 and hate on 5150 and OU812. All 3 could use more bass.

I used to dislike DD because Eddie hated it. Pretty Woman is a cool cover. Just overplayed. Plus the Intruder into is really cool. That said the originals on it are as good as the best CVH originals The Full Bug just oozes the swag of CVH. Plus you have weird shit like Happy Trails and Big Bad Bill. Its definiitely been elevated in my ranking of VH albums

On a side note my cover band just learned Little Guitars and such a fun song to play.

I think the lack of bass on 1984 gets overlooked simply because Ed's guitar tone still has a lot of balls to it. Which by OU812, can't be said.

Fair Warning was the last album with pronounced bass in the mix (until ADKOT, which even as a bass player, I think it's a little too forward in the mix, especially a distorted bass tone, but that's just me).
If I don't respond to you it means I have you on ignore, which means you are a douchenozzle.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

If I could only choose two songs from Diver Down it would be Hang 'em High and The Full Bug. Those two songs would have fit nicely on any of the previous records.
