Those 2 new tracks from ‘96 were epic, especially “Me wise magic”. Even though Dave was only in for those tracks, does it bother you they didn’t stay with Ballard for “VHIII”? Ballards production on the 2 new tracks was superior. It baffles me why Ed chose Mike Post, who’d never did a rock album before.

Yes. Yes it does. Anyone, and I do mean anyone, would have been a better fit than mike post.

This has literally been discussed ad nauseam here, but having looked up Mike Post the other day for the first time (I knew he was a TV theme song composer but that was about it) I found that he actually was accomplished.

He arranged and produced Mason Williams' Classical Gas and won a Grammy at the age of 23.

He also worked with Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton. He produced 9 to 5 and Odd Jobs.

I also dont believe you need a "rock" producer to produce a great rock album. Same way you don't need a "horror" or "thriller" director to direct a great horror or thriller movie. They just need to be damn good at what they do and by all accounts Mike Post was damn good at what he did.

But yeah, Glen Ballard would have still been the better choice.

But he would have never been considered. Nor would any established or very accomplished producer have been. Nobody would have had their say with Ed. He wanted somebody who wasn't going to push him and say, "Fuck this. I'm leaving...." And Mike was that guy.

The end result doesn't speak to Mike's particular skill-level at the job as much as it does Ed wanting to produce the album himself but needed somebody there to help him.

That album is Ed's and Ed's only. Warts and all. He owns that album himself.

IMO I don't like the way Mike Post produced VH3. Ed gets the blame and he partly deserves it but some of the songs needed to be shortened and needed to sound better. Mike Post didn't help do any of that and yes Glen Ballard would have been a better fit for VH3. At least there are a few Van Halen gems on VH3 Without You, Fire In The Hole, From Afar, One I Want, A Year To The Day, Once, Josephina, How Many Say I (I like it). 3 was a good album but Mike and Ed kept it from being great.

While I agree that the production isn’t as good as should have been.

Mike Post didn’t produce VH III, though.

Ed did. There wasn’t a single thing done to the sound and production of that album that Ed didn’t sign off on.

There wasn’t anything any producer - I don’t care if it was Eddie Kramer, Glen Ballard, or Quincy Jones - could have done for that album because Ed didn’t want them.

Ed wanted somebody who was going to do exactly as he said without quitting. Hence why he hired a guy who was mainly known as a tv show theme composer to produce his bands next record that had a brand new singer for the first time in 12 years.

Essentially, the exact opposite of what 99.9% of managers and representatives would recommend in a situation like that.

Ed wanted Yes men surrounding him from 1996-1999.

I've listened to III a few hundred times. I know people lament the production, but it has always sounded fine to me. It sounds better than Ou812 and F.U.C.K. I don't understand the ire.

    Agreed with respect to OU812.

III’s not terrible but it also wasn’t the production that was on Humans Being, CGTSNM or Me Wise Magic, either.

MF5150 put it in a nutshell. As great as the 96 tracks were though, the 3 new tracks on BOBW weren't that good.
The songs obviously were left over ideas for "VHIII " and Sammys just came in and put some quick lyrics over them. I think they had to put out something quick for the tour, and thats all that they had. Ballard probably thought "I just gotta do this, then get the fuck out of here". It took months to record those 3 new tracks.

    Mike Post...
He also did this Magnum P.I. theme. I always liked this riff. Sounds a bit like the music Ed wrote for the Wild Life soundtrack.

I wished Ballard would have produced VHIII. The sound on the ‘96 songs was great.

VHIII is nails on a chalkboard to me, and that isn't hyperbole, it makes me wince when I hear it. Can't explain it, something about it simply makes my ears bleed.

I think the failure of VH3 really affected Ed. That was HIS album and HIS band finally.

IIRC, Gary said Post wasn't even around a whole lot during production.

I know this is a thread about Glenn Ballard, and I do think he would have been a much better producer on VHIII. What Ed needed was a push-back producer that he respected. What if Ted Templeman had produced VHIII?

Ed made III with a Hollywood golf buddy. Post ain't looking back on that with any shame... he twisted the knobs at 5150.
