Besides his playing ability, the experimentation with his equipment also made him a legend.

I didn't realize that 2016 Total Guitar EVH issue was in fact Edward's last interview. Remembered I posted it before back then & figured might as well put it here now again since it goes along with the thread.

Although, I think there is another EVH magazine interview after this....The one where Ed ended the interview abruptly saying something about seeing a coyote in his back yard ...a big fucker.... there was a cool snazzy artistic painting of Ed with the feature.... possibly a Golf magazine....

How often do you see Mike & Ed on the cover...

What is Mike so happy about....why is his hand so deep down in the jeans pocket....

A little pocket pool going on perhaps....

    Hehehe hehehe

Ahhh- The good old days, the good old days,....

They will ALWAYS be good old days. Nothing changes a good day. Good days are forever.

In terms of Ed ruining guitars, it's sad but at the same time he was very young and probably had no idea that guitars like a 335 would be a valuable collectors item now. Especially since that is the guitar that his son prefers! Can you imagine if Wolfgang owned Ed's original unharmed 1968 Gibson ES-335? I'm sure he would have loved to have it but at the same time, none of that experimentation would have brought Ed to where he is today. There really is so much confusion in terms of VH history when it comes to the band members themselves. I personally think if Mike were to ever write a book, it would paint the most clear picture but Mike will never do that and I truly think that sadly he was left out of a lot of key things.

The story of where Ed got tapping is an odd one as ed claims it came from watching Jimmy Page in 1971. I think Greg's book more than likely paints the most accurate picture. I had also heard for years about how Eddie said he had no idea where the stripes came from and just a year or so ago I saw something where Dave claimed that it was HIS idea. I do believe that Ed was a genius in terms of the things he came up with and the techniques he created. I do think that without his incredible feel though, none of that would have sounded the way it did. His rhythm guitar playing is just like butter.

I guess it's hard for me to hear the ruined guitar stories because I collect vintage drums and there are so many drums that got bastardized in the 70's. I will say with Ludwig drums though, I don't see where much would have been needed to mess with. The supraphonic snare drum design started around 1958 and it's still used today. Alex did alter his club days Ludwig set to add bass drums and elongate them, but that was a pretty cool mod and that set looked awesome. In fact I really think Alex was quite the innovator in terms of the looks of his drums back in the 80's as he had the most unique set ups of any other drummer I can think of. Did he really need all that stuff? probably not as VH was not an orchestral band like RUSH but Alex knew that with a big stage and larger than life songs, the drums had to be at that same larger than life level. Though I would never want to wish a set that size on any roadie or club drummer nowadays, it really was something and seeing Alex behind there was seriously like seeing superman back there. At least for me it was.

I think it's a safe assumption, he rarely talks about the band, past members, etc. Sam and DLR get asked about that all the time in their interviews, I am sure interviewers wanted to, but were told ahead of time "these are the topics he is willing to discuss".

Yes if you want an interview with any of the guys, there will be guidelines. Its not like Eddie Trunk interviewing Marq Torrien of Bulletboyz

Concerning the guitars, I admire him having the stones to do that. It wasn't like he was rolling in the money. Shows the committment and how deadset he was to look for a particular sound.

You have to sit pretty close to someone to teach them how to play bass.

The thing with this band is it was always a volatile unit. Whatever you read about them during a certain year didn't apply to the next. Even maybe month to month. Plenty of times when Ed was friendly to Mike. That's why Mike was so hurt when Ed turned on him. If Ed had been a dickhead all along, Mike would've been "that's to be expected, he was was always that way." But he wasn't.

Aww. Poor Mike again. It was tough being abused all those years. I don't know how he put up with it but I know what helped...
