I just like normal rock Ďní roll. This theatrical shit just doesnít appeal to me. But it never did. Queen is about as theatrical as I liked.

It sounds like music you find in Phantom of The Opera or something lol I donít know. Just not anything I would be interested in.

The main riff is literally Electric Eye - the same notes in the same order. (minus the bass note pedal). As a major JP fan he clearly 'borrowed' it.

BTW, that live clip of Mary on a Cross, is superb. Just listen to the harmonies and key change on the outro. That's craftmanship and with a desired goal to elevate the listener's mood - not a cynical key change because 'hey, it was really popular in Livin' On A Prayer'', as is the case with most that do the same. And is it just me or is the change up in every chorus when he sings "if you choose to run away with me" just transcendental?

As disinterested people seem intent to insert themselves into yet another topic and derail by posting irrelevant videos, I figured it'd be good to get it back on track. I really dig this cover of Square Hammer. The guy's surprising bass and powerful voice and the woman's sexual allure is an intoxicating combo.

Also, the chorus wouldn't be half as catchy without the guitar fills (which, ironically, the guy in this video fluffs). That's the genius of Forge.

And not one but three key changes, including a double key change, before the song is even 40 seconds old! Talk about balls of steel. Despite this it effortlessly rolls along and sounds like it could have been written by Benny and Born for the Visitors album, augmented by beautifully-tempered middle solos.

People may not like the songs but from a songwriting level the prowess is a tour de force. As well as a stinging riposte to some admittedly fair criticism that previous songs hinted at recycled chordal patterns.

Of all the songs youíve posted this one is probably the one I didnít think was terrible. Sounds like ABBA or something.

Itís OK. I donít think itís like some revolutionary music, but I get why people probably like it. Itís pop music. It sounds like a song that wouldíve fit on the Karate Kid soundtrack lol.

Just not my cup of tea. But again, I fully admit my musical journey stopped in like 1998 I guess.

I fully understand. The ABBA vibe is definitely there, along with the Toto intro. New music with so many callbacks to old-time classics. A modern song but with a decidedly 80s twist (and 70s with the ABBA/Bob Seger/Billy Joel/Toto/Elton John 8th note piano taking centre stage).

And you're right, it's not revolutionary but the craftmanship is both evident and profound - which is why I said even people who don't like it could (and should) learn from it. I also hear you about musical journey stopping. Mine stopped in '93 save the odd exception, as with Ghost. (And even then it's because of the old-school feel).

I'm not here to convert anyone and I'm happy to discuss with fans or anyone wanting to know more about the band or why they have such a mystique. The one thing I don't get is the people with zero interest but are posting anyway. I mean. I don't venture into baseball threads because I don't give a toss and it'd just be a monumental waste of time fuelled by arrogance and vanity.

Each to their own and all that but do you genuinely not like Square Hammer? It's the most 'traditional' rock song they've done that wouldn't be out of place on a Priest, Maiden, Ozzy or even Vah Halen album.

Here's a challenge - give Square Hammer, Spillways and Call Me Little Sunshine a few more listens over the next few days. Just put them on whilst you're pottering about the house or in the car and by the end of the week come back and tell me if you've changed your opinion or not. I wasn't a fan of Sunshine (my first introduction to them) and it was a slow burn yet ultimately entrancing song. Would love to see if you end up feeling the same.

Ok. I listened to all of those clips, and I can honestly say that this kicks every one of those songs' asses ...

I just don’t get the whole image thing with them.
It's certainly contradictory to their sound. Then again, maybe that's the point. Take people by surprise by looking like one thing but sounding like another. Maybe his musical tastes changed but he didn't want to give up on one of his biggest selling points (always gets people talking, for good or bad). Maybe it was a brilliant ploy to appeal to both metal and pop fans at the same time - audiences that generally dislike each other. Or maybe it's just a cynical way to entice pop fans into heavier music. I don't really care, I'm just glad to see an original, non-mogul manufactured band churning out good (I know that's subjective) music that's written by musicians and played on real instruments.

It just sounds like fucking pop music. Why dress like that? It’s just weird. It’s just strange to hear that kind of music coming from guys who are dressed like they crawled out from a BDSM porn video.
That's why my challenge is to just listen to them and forget about their image. I'm quietly confident they'll grow on you.
