The question is does that diminish Randy Rhoads as a guitarist?

in my unpopular opinion, randy’s tone is so bad and the production so coke eared on what he played on that i much prefer jake and zack. randy was pushed on me pretty hard as a kid, only thing i really liked was the major third he would throw in his minor scales. for me, it’s holdsworth, paco, and evh. also, i found george lynch much more interesting as a player then randy, he probably needs to have a little more respect on his name.

it makes me laugh that eddie and dlr gave randy a bunch of shit, randy of course is still a great player and made his mark.

I prefer Zakk’s early work with Ozzy as well.

    Over Randy and Jake.

Coke eared? What are you, a Pepsi guy?

What exactly is wrong with Randy's tone and production on the following songs?

i don't know much of Randy Rhoads but i do know he was never a member of KISS and thus not involved in their decision not to have Gene get involved with the management of Van Halen!

it’s certainly my unpopular opinion but that half cocked wah midrange kills me, the over dubs are harsh on my ears just too much midrange for me. 1984 is super mid rangey as well but ed’s guitar doesn’t sound harsh if just sounds focused. randy is a great player and better then i will ever be but i’m tired of acting like i have to like some players. he doesn’t do it for me, to be honest i like chris poland’s use of the major third more anyways. the arpeggios in mr crowley are extra tough, i give him that, same with over the mountain.

to keep it short, i don’t like the gain structure and shrill eq on randy’s amp. it’s harsh and unpleasant unlike evh, which sounds smooth and fluid, fat.

also, i should have read the thread and saw sinner_swing pretty much wrote the same thing. were you a metro amp guy? i feel like everyone who kicked it over there had the same general feelings/philosophy on the electric guitar.

Randy's tone was annoyingly midrangy and thin sounding IMO. I clicked on the embedded videos above and I was like "yep, still sounds like shit". His tone on Tribute was better.

I liked Jake's playing more than Randy's playing, there was a rawness about it that I loved. Better tone too. But I liked the tunes on Blizzard and Diary better than anything Jake did, sans Bark, and the tracks Rock and Roll Rebel, The Ultimate Sin and The Killer of Giants.

For my money Jake's bends and vibrato blew Randy's out of the water. Same goes for Zakk, better tone and his bends and vibrato are great and I liked the albums up until about No More Tears. Ozzy had some strong tunes during the early Zakk years. After that I was out.

I think No More Tears is Ozzy's best album with Zakk.

Just compare Ed's incredible tone on WACF and FW to Randy's during the same period and it becomes quite clear there is no comparison.

Or compare VHI and VHII tones to the QR albums lol.

Look, Randy was an awesome player, but saying his tone wasn't all that doesn't mean people think he sucked, and it is true his legacy has become overstated because of his early untimely death. He's certainly not the first, nor will he be the last, to have that happen. As Brett said, imagine Ed dying in 1984. He would likely be bigger than Hendrix today. He should be anyways, but that's a different discussion lol.

Ed’s early tone is comparable to one other player’s tone and one only.

    And that’s mid-70’s Billy Gibbons.

    They’re virtually identical.
