I remember being in Vegas for the super bowl months after 9/11. We are in a hall at Caesars for the game and the anthem is about to start. I turn to my brother and ask if we should stand if you're watching the anthem on tv. He looks at me says something along the lines of "better to be looked at as ovey respectful than to look like douchebags". Whole room stood and sang the hell out of the anthem. I had goossbumps.

I probably would have asked the same thing, honestly. Iíve never stood or seen anybody stand for an Anthem in a bar setting.

But yeah, you wouldnít have wanted to have been the only two foreigners sitting down during the US anthem in a Vegas bar full of alcohol and American football fans mere months after 9/11.

But you stood, so youíre here to tell us this story in one piece.

Everybody should stand for a National Anthem, whether itís their countryís or not. Itís a sign of respect.

Then at that very moment, the second plane crashed in the second tower. I was shocked and confused as to what I was seeing that morning getting ready for work. I remember getting to Love Field (DAL) and we had grounded all our aircraft. It was a surreal day, and I remember worrying about our pilots, flight attendants, and customers also possibly being in a hijack situation and what other dangers and attacks we, as Americans, might be facing that morning. I will always be grateful that all of Southwestís planes, Crews, and Customers were safely accounted for that day.

On September 14, 2001, Southwest was the first airline to return to the skies, and I was so proud of American and those initial flights.
My experience was somewhat similar. In 2001, I was working for Air Canada. I worked in Reservations at the time. Like everyone else, I was stunned to watch the events of that morning. AC had a codeshare agreement with United, so it was possible that I may have booked a passenger or two onto 175 or 93. I later was speaking to a passenger who was re-booking his reservation, and he was on an AC flight which departed LGA in New York at 8:45 am, so he actually saw the 1st crash from a distance, as his plane was taking off. Pretty crazy stuff.

    God bless America.

I'll never forget that day but I don't wanna relive it anymore. 20 years is a big one no doubt. It's one of those things that's just too overwhelming for me. I can't watch wall to wall coverage.

My parents got stuck in Iowa or some corn state as their plane got grounded. Didnít know where my parents were for about 4 hours.

yup. It's funny that they don't recognize that they live in one of the few countries that they can do that and not fear for their lives, never mind making themselves stars by doing it. In Italy, if you play on the national team and don't sing the anthem with enough energy they rip you a new a-hole. If you ever see a video of the anthem played it's like the guy running the camera makes sure to get a clear shot of every player on the team so you can see if they are singing. There was a campaign to have one guy removed from the team when he admitted he didn't know the words (after they won the World Cup).

Yep, spoiled brats who don't have the self awareness to realize just how blessed they truly are to live in this country. Patriotism should not be viewed as a bad thing, especially if you are representing your country at the Olympics. Pretty cool that Italy takes it seriously.

I've heard of several stories like that where people got stuck in strange places after all those flights were grounded. What a clusterfuck.

I just don't understand the need to spit on your own country if your true intention is to make things better. You're gonna get a whole lot more support from everyone being seen as the guy who says "I love my country but we can really do "issue x" better". Saying that isn't gonna piss people off, and if you're a star athlete you've got a huge platform to do that.

I've been watching the multi-part mini series from by National Geographic "9/11 A Day In America" this past week. A very tough watch but really, one of the best 9/11 docs I've seen.
