    Default Eddies Bumble Bee

I was watching this doc on HBO : Bitching the sound and fury of Rick janes
The guitarist was playing the black and yellow bumble bee it was on soul train
His first big album 1978 any insight would be great ie did Ed bite this guys style or did he copy him?

I saw this footage recently too. I believe this was one of the VH style Charvels that were being sold around that time - part of the reason why Ed abandoned the bee and caused issues between Ed and Charvel / Grover Jackson.

If Ed striping guitars was inspired by anybody it was more likely Chip Kinman of the Dils, a contemporary of Ed's that put electrical tape on a white Les Paul.

I can't find it on Youtube or anywhere but you can see the aforementioned guitar and striping in Cheech and Chongs Up In Smoke during the battle of the bands. I know Chip says Eddie stole it from him but VH1 was released in Feb 1978. Up in Smoke September 1978. So obviously VH1 was recorded in 1977 and its likely Up in Smoke was filmed early 1978.

Who knows who got it first. We do know who popularized it

I remember that…he played it during Superfreak…I remember at the time thinking the guitarist looked out of place in Rick James’ band. I also recall thinking he was copying Eddie’s look and guitar.

Here he is on Merv Griffin…

    That just looks so wrong.
If I don't respond to you it means I have you on ignore, which means you are a douchenozzle.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

Around this same time Cameo released the song Candy with a wicked Ed type of Solo. At the time it was so brutal to hear Ed's style on a cool pop hit.

Unrelated, but the story of a party happening at Sharon Tate's house the night she was murdered is false.

Rick James claims he was sleeping off a hangover, skipped a party, and thus avoided being murdered. It ain't true.

Mick Mars from Motley Crue ended up owning that Bee, but he hated the think paint and clear and had it sanded back to bare wood.

    It now looks like this...

If you have nothing nice to say about Eddie Van Halen, you're at the right website. - Me (A few years ago)

"People take Van Halen much more seriously than we do" - David Lee Roth (1980's)

"I don't sit on the end of your bed while you're trying to make a living" - David Lee Roth (1988)

"For some reason people love to complain about everything. The internet has made it easy for people to do that. Shut the fuck up and get a life, or show me how good you can do it."- Edward Van Halen

"A lot of people ask me which Van Halen singer was better. You can't compare them. It's like asking which guitarist is better. Nobody is better than anybody. Every player is their own person."-Edward Van Halen

"I do like Eddie Van Halen as a player. He gets it right quite often." -Paul McCartney

“The heart and the soul and the creativity and the magic was Dave, Ed, Mike, and me,” - Alex Van Halen 2024

I believe Derek Smalls started the trend in 1967 with the Thamesmen.

Up in Smoke was filmed in May and June of 1977.

Van Halen I was recorded in October of 1977.

But the guitar was stripped before they recorded.

Yup, so we definitely have a very short time frame to work with. It would help if we knew how long before Up in Smoke filming the guitar was striped. In Van Halen Rising, the first mention of the Frankie being striped was actually done with electrical tape. The Up in Smoke guitarist had electrical tape strung across his shirt. Can't say for sure if the guitar was painted that way, or was using electrical tape
