Default For Discussion - MTV's "Welcome Back, Dave" Promo

As many may remember (or reminded by VHND's most recent news entry), yesterday was the 25th Anniversary of CVH appearing at the 1996 MTV Video Awards show.

The main object of this post is not to re-litigate the choice to appear, the mismanagement of VH's public image (esp. during the entirety of 1996 when VH arguably have four or five lead singers during that ill-fated calendar year), of any of the other drama that surrounded the band at that time. Rather, and something I had not really ever given much consideration to, what do my fellow VH fans make of MTV making the decision to create a one-minute promo video/endorsement of the presumptive return of DLR to the VH fold?

To place some context around my curiosity, MTV creating the video and then airing it multiple times (in lieu of the commercial ads that they sold and had as inventory) prematurely celebrating Roth's return to VH is a rather unusual move for that time. By the Sept. 4th, 1996 Video Awards, the rock world had witnessed and/or become aware of at least two other high-profile "returns" -- the reformation of the Eagles in 1994 (at least the last recording and touring incarnation that left the stage with "The Long Run" (1979) and its tour (79-80) and Steve Perry's return to Journey. And while I cannot swear to watching a lot of MTV from 1994 through 1996 b/c of its shift to what was considered alternative, hip-hop, and dance, I have no recollection of MTV creating celebratory promos on behalf of the Eagles and Journey.

Additionally, I recently completed the book "I Want My MTV" (Tannebaum + Marks), and while the channel certainly placed most of its focus on the rock/hard rock genres in the first several years of the channel, the book reveals a behind-the-scenes atmosphere that held rock/hard rock (and later the glam metal artists) in contempt. It puts off the vibe that MTV powers that be held a similar set of opinions relative to the reputation that "Rolling Stone" magazine -- elitist snobs and wanna-be king-makers. And though VH was never a "glam" band (or even "metal"), VH is often cited as the key inspiration for the glam metal aesthetics: the tall hair; the pyro; the bright colors; the "shred" guitar.

So, with some of this context, it begs the question: WHY did Roth's presumed return prompt/motivate MTV to create that 60-second promo for a lead singer and a version of the band that many in the ivory tower of rock music opinion found contemptible and rather base?

Just curious as to the thoughts of others, esp. those that were watching this soap opera play itself out during the summer/fall of 1996.

Kiss had just reunited, put on the greasepaint and sold out stadiums and arenas that summer. It was the ‘year of the reunion.’

That video really pissed off Ed if I remember.

"I ain't nobody's fucking backup guitarist" or something like that.

Because either way, VH and Dave were such a huge part of MTV's early days.

Man, I was so glad (though duped) to finally have Roth back in VH. My band was back together!

Such a letdown when it imploded (if a falsehood can be described as an implosion).

Gary leaving in 99 is what brought me to the Links.

I just remember being so happy during that time frame until DLR was ditched. I remember watching the MTV BS for the first time in years thinking Dave would show up with VH and he did. The reaction was incredible. It was in the newspaper the next day. It was a major reunion.
    Right here I say....

I was super stoked to have Dave back, but he really seemed weird at the MTV Awards show. I still remember thinking maybe this isn't such a great idea... but wanting it so bad.

To this day, I can say in all honesty that seeing Ed, Al, and Mike sharing a stage with the Dave in 1996 left me incredulous and depressed.

I was ecstatic. The depressing part is the original four never shared a stage again.

+1000. If memory serves, I finally picked up VHII on CD, after watching the awards.
