He actually said the sentence, ‘congratulations you’re in the band.’...Malloy added: “Yeah at least in that moment it was officially I was the lead singer of Van Halen.”

“Then I went back. They had told me they were gonna go on MTV and they didn’t say anything about going on MTV with David Lee Roth though (laughs). So, but he told me they were going on MTV cause MTV wanted them to present to support the new Van Halen. We’d really like you do this and (winks eye) well help out the new Van Halen kinda thing. Help us out we’ll help you out. So, that was the deal. And then when Roth walked out. I mean I was at home in Nashville. I’d flown back to Nashville. So, I was like (makes big eye expression) ‘uh oh’. This isn’t going to work.”

    Cherone's account of the event:

"I got on the phone with Eddie Van Halen a few times and we wrote a song over the telephone. I flew out for the weekend and we just hit it off. We started writing the moment I got off the plane and he actually asked me to join the second day I was there.

"I remember one morning getting up to go to the studio, and no one told me all this press was interviewing the Van Halen guys because of the Video Music Awards. They told me, 'Gary, no one knows you're in the band'. I remember bumping into a photographer who knew me from Extreme he goes, 'What are you doing here?' I go, 'Nothing'."

    https://www.ultimate-guitar.com/news...en_secret.html
I find it even more interesting how it really went down with Gary departing the band more than Mitch and his VH experience.

The rolling stone interview from 2012 is very interesting w/Gary. It sounds like Al gave Gary the boot from the band as Gary for a few more months was living in Ed's guest house and Ed wanted to write stuff with Gary and Ed said "can we".
    https://www.rollingstone.com/music/m...n-halen-70242/

How did it end? What happened exactly?
We went through a couple of people that were working with us. The hours got more crazy, a little bit more manic. Not everyone would be around. I’d be hanging out with a producer and he’d say, “Write to this.” And Eddie would be on some crazy hours.

I remember going home for a couple of weeks and coming back and we had a meeting. I don’t know if Dave was on their mind. They were making a move and they were just getting rid of the manager, and I was part of that. But we sat down, me and Alex. He was like, “We sense that you’re unhappy and a little bit frustrated.” I was playing the diplomat. It wasn’t crazy dysfunction because we all could talk, but there was an unhappiness and they wanted to move in a different direction. And I was cool with it. I really was.

I spent another couple of months at Ed’s house with the band broken up. If I had a lyric, I’d show it to him. Me and Eddie were like, “Yeah, can we still write?” I was like, “Yeah, great!” At the time I was hoping that Extreme were going to get back together, but that took another five years. Extreme ended too soon for me. Even though I spent three years with Van Halen and loved it, my heart and soul has always been with Extreme.
Whatever truly happened in 1999 it cost us a freaking Van Halen studio album. They should have taken a break and went back at it.

Actually if you watch all the clips of the show Pete noticeably screwed up numerous times throughout the show on various tunes, including Unchained. I think he's a really good player but he was off that night. It happens. His original material stands out, he should stick with that.

I don't think anybody is hard up. It's just something to do. Get out and have a few drinks.

Everybody posts their best take online. The adrenaline and electricity of performing a piece like that live is entirely different.

Yeah, Pete brain farted on the tapping section. It happens to everybody, and it's especially excusable when the rest of the piece was executed so well.

I don't doubt that, was just commenting on his Eruption performance which is the only clip I saw.

It's not a one-off thing. The dude has a strategy, he's been at it for a few years. It's part of a plan.

Yeah, I doubt he created a logo and merchandise for a one off show in a small club.

When I was on my quest to buy a Malloy t-shirt, I read that the outdoor park has a capacity to hold 5k people. Did anyone post a photo or video of the crowd other than the runway stage view? It looks like a few hundred in attendance maybe there was more… a lot more. I seriously doubt it but you never know.

Appreciate you posting the Cherone interview, and I agree: Ed was resistant towards taking direction during III, but had he compromised a bit, the third iteration would've worked well: Cherone was covering all of the material; he's a great lyricist; he and Ed got along well.

I am disappointed that we didn't hear any follow up material to III.

I think there was a larger problem. EVH was unable to accept one of his albums going gold instead of multi-platinum. But if you think about it, very, very few bands in history have had more than 10 multi-platinum records. I'm not sure if even AC/DC did. So it was almost inevitable that at one point, the winning streak was going to end. Maybe a Sam or Dave record would've extended it to having an 11th platinum record. But after that, with all the changes in the music biz, inevitably it would've ended. And that ending would've been brutal for Ed, who was so sensitive, no matter when it came.
