Oh, he's not bright. Not at all. To my mind you need to have produced and released material with the band to have been IN the band. But, when Ed gives you the kiss of all kisses and says you're in the band, and you spend weeks writing and playing music with him while living in his house...technically, yeah...you're in the band. Technically. Kind of like a Vegas wedding, maybe it seemed a good idea at the time. But, if no contract was ever signed, then he was never "officially" in the band. But, I still believe his story.

It was an easy choice to musically Ed likely listened to all the Extreme albums or most of them and than Mitch Malloy's stuff. If Mitch wonders why Ed chose the former lead singer of Extreme (at the time) than he has no clue what he's talking about. If Ed chose Mitch over Gary than you can question what is going on with Ed. Gary though was more qualified for the job and Ed and Alex took the best available singer at the time. I think though Ed felt chemistry musically with Gary that maybe he didn't feel with Mitch.

I don’t count Mitch as a being a member of VH at any time. Casual fans know Dave, Sammy and sometimes the “Extreme” guy. But Mitch….nope.

With Van Halen I always believe the full truth is never on display. Just due to the security issues and egos of the band members, we never really get a true sense of what happened. Well maybe not Gary because that guy throughout his whole career seems to have never got in anytype of shit. Never took anybody's side. Extreme or VH. Anyway we know about Mitch's involvment due to one person. Mitch. I don't think Eddie ever commented about it. I don't think Alex or Mike did either. Just Mitch.

He could be telling the truth but we have no idea if its the way that it went down. I still think Patty Smythe was closer to being the singer of VH than Mitch but who knows

Listen to this interview at around 3:30. I believe Eddie is talking about Mitch Malloy. Ed says "we tried another guy and it could've worked."

That interview is the gift that keeps on giving around 5:20 mark Ed said the demo for Without You is on the record. I never knew they used the demo and maybe never did a studio version. I like it the way it is but could have sounded way better had they done a polished studio version. Makes me wonder how many other demos made the record. Also good news about the follow up to VH3 some of that stuff might sound decent if Without You as said is actually a freaking demo. Best demo I have ever heard if Ed wasn't talking out of his ass there.

Thank you for posting this; it sounds to me like he was referring to Malloy, but from his side, whoever the guy was, he was more a rockstar than he was a musician; Gary was a better fit.

From Malloy's side, when he "left" the band after the MTV debacle, he claimed that they "let him go;" that there was no attempt at renegotiating from the Van Halen side; they let him walk.

    ***

EVH himself said that other producers tried to steer the band into sounding like Van Halen; it's a shame, because another producer might've made the third iteration work.

Another producer would have been fired if they tried to impose their will over what the record should have sounded like (ie. more like a VH record).

Ed wanted a yes man. Nobody else.

The why even hire a producer? Friend or not but Ed had been in and out of studios for years including his own.

Doesn’t mean he knew all the technical aspects behind producing and engineering a record.

He just needed and wanted somebody to realize his vision for the album.

In a perfect world, Ed would have done a reunion tour with Dave first. I think we'd all agree with that (or at least a good amount of us would).

If the project with Gary would have just been called 'Eddie Van Halen' or 'EVH' then the backlash wouldn't have turned Ed into a hermit in my opinion.

Dude, had they had competent management, they could’ve taken over the world in 1996.

Kiss who? Dave’s back. Instant stadium tour. Brinks trucks at 5150 and god only knows what would’ve happened had they had Irving azoff.

Plus Dave's voice was better in 1996, he looked younger (he hadn't bleach his hair yet). Grunge was already on its way out, NuMetal hadn't hit yet. 1996 would've been massive for CVH.
