I saw CVH live twice and neither touched LWAN or any of the live shows I saw with Sam up through 1995.

I'm listening to Osaka 79 on my way home and it is just insane how good these guys were. The extended jams the band did routinely on FYLT and YRGM in 1979 easily blow away anything on LWAN, including 5150.

For the "It's all about Eddie" crowd or the Sam guys, sure "5150" on LWAN is probably their pinnacle, but it is really not a particularly an incredible performance by Al. He pretty much omits all the big fills during the outro from the album version, and Mike at no point on LWAN tears it up the way he did on the earlier tours when he would really let loose with his playing.
It's probably too simple to just say "it's a different band" but it really was. Just comparing the 3 videos from Oakland to LWAN, even though they are only 6 years apart - the band had changed dramatically. Better or worse is a matter of taste of course but it's very hard to even compare them as live attractions.

I've heard many bootleg Ed solos. LWAN is the best. Everything is clean and almost perfect sounding. Plus, bootleg sound like shit. I can't listen to that shit for more than 4 minutes.

I wish Ed had continued expanding on the tray table piano tapping he did on this tour. It was cool he revisited it for the Judgment Day solo in 91, but he chose to do the least interesting part of the piece he did on the 84 tour unfortunately.

1984 was kind of the last tour where he didn't just do a "Greatest bits" concert solo.

Anytime I wanna get a taste of what that 1984 tour must've been like I go back to this video

Sadly that's probably the best footage we'll ever get

Ed never played the Spanish Fly two hand tapping run better than he did on that 1984 tour. He was really stretching and tweaking those notes like he never did before, and never did again after that tour. He went back to playing it more straight like the album version on all future tours.

Also love how clean his tone was on that tour and how articulate all the notes were, especially on the European gigs at the end of the tour where he was really noodling a lot during his solo.

IMO Ed's greatest guitar sound was on 1984 and on the ensuing tour. Extremely clean but scarily loud.

Sheer volume induced overdrive. No "gain". No distortion. Just loudness pushing the tubes to breakup.

People equate the 'brown sound' with the earlier albums. To me, 1984 is the brown sound in a nutshell. Clean, articulate, and sizzling.

That, also, should be the sound VH-centric players should practice with, IMO. I think many would be shocked at how unforgivable it is and how clean you'd need to play.

If there was one live rig of EVH's that I'd love to have a go on, it would be the one from 1984. Pushing lots of fucking air with that rig.
