If they videotaped both nights, they could re-release a deluxe version of LWAN.

But that will never happen, especially since that would mean putting some money in Sam and Mike's pockets.

They made a big mistake in my book doing away with the two guitars when live in concert after 5150 shows.

A definite highlight of LWAN ...

IMO, this is far superior to the studio version on 5150.

You look at all the old fan awards from Hit Parader, Creem, etc., Van Halen was the fan favorite live act for years and years.

And all they released from that is one classic concert video (LWAN), one ridiculously doctored live album (RHRN), an almost unwatchable concert video (RHRN), and then an incredibly lackluster live recording of VH Mach IV.

    It's a head scratcher.

LWAN, for us Dave fans, is begrudgingly the best live representation of Van Halen in concert, and it isn't even close.
It's pretty clear why. EVH was an ultra perfectionist. Even when others would tell him he played like a God, he always thought he could've done better. That attitude, while great in a way (he was pushing himself to always be better), was detrimental to the release of live recordings and videos. And with VHIV Tokyo Dome, I guess he just gave up and said "fuck it."

    Sam still played guitar on TOOWTR & 55 in 88, 91, 92, 93 (includes guitar duel), 95, (just 55 at a few 2004 shows)

It got even crazier in 1995... Sam has the guitar on for the Runnin with the Devil intro....lol... before they go into TOOWTR....

    +++++

Sam still had a guitar for WCTBL in 1988. Ed plays keys with guitar strapped on, but Sam still plays solo.

91 on for WCTBL, Ed only on guitar.

93 for LWI, Ed only on guitar.

I do not have the best ear in the world (nor am I much of a guitar player - just for my own amusement), but this has the SOUND and influence of Ritchie Blackmore's "Smoke on the Water" and the finger-plucked dyads that Blackmore plays on the recording. EVH is plucking faster (and probably the I-IV-V that Wild Thing is typically played - whereas Smoke hints at I-III-IV with a slide from V-to-IV at the end of the lick).

Sorry for the dorky/wonky response - but EVH's lick at that time signature reminds me of SotW.

I think they rarely played "Make It Last." All I found online is this version:

They don't sound very tight on it, I understand why they dropped it. Not really a song for Eddie. You need to leave big gaps for the vocals.

i would love to see lwan 84, the opening with the guy screaming and them launching into unchained at twice the bpm with dave jumping off the riser would be probably the coolest live show to see on the planet, but i don’t get to live in that world. sigh.

I think other tours were better than the 1984 tour, for the Dave years, from the boots i heard.
