I have been listening to these for a few weeks. One thing that I totally didn't hear due to vocals was the rhythm guitar in House of Pain. There are these accents Eddie is doing on guitar which are really cool since its almost like a funk or big band vibe.

Another one which I always thought was ruined by Gary is Ballot or Bullet. Some cool guitar stuff going on in there.

I think that III was ruined by Gary by fault of production. He strained too much trying to sound somewhat like Sammy.

Also, whereas many early VH songs are predominantly a (absolutely killer) riff repeated over and over till the bridge and solo sections, the III material feels like complete compositions. They're far more complex. Without You is overlong and disjointed with vocals but completely epic as an instrumental and I cant stop listening to Dirty Water Dog and One I Want. That groove! Yes, Gary was a mistake, but the Ed's biggest mistake was pursuing a third singer at all. III should have been an instrumental album. I fully believe that's what Ed really wanted. Really miss that guy BUT hearing III as it was meant to be heard is like getting a new VH album filled with Ed's most personal and diverse music. For that I am grateful.

One thing: I know Ed was playing a lot of Cello in the III era and I know he played some violin when he was younger. Is Ed playing the Strings on How Many Say I?
Ed plays a Cello solo on How Many Say I?

And he also does some very minimal cello work on Up For Breakfast - he does slides in between chord changes during the solo - I always though it was a whammy bar w/ an octave pedal until a string player friend said "That's a neat way to incorporate a cello into rock and roll" I nearly dropped my jaw at the realization.

Sam has three song writing styles, and two of them are good in my opinion.

When he is earnest, knocks it out of the park.

When he is angry, knocks it out of the park.

His party rock songs, for a large portion, suck ass. Yeah, he has his exceptions, One Way to Rock, Mas Tequila, Summer Nights, etc., but that is more than offset but fucking stinkers like SIATPS, UFB and a multitude of other lyrical crimes against rock and roll.

I once saw a reviewer call songs like this "dunderhead rock", and I couldn't agree more.
If I don't respond to you it means I have you on ignore, which means you are a douchenozzle.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

A man's rights rests in three boxes: the ballot box, the jury box, and the cartridge box

Hurricane Halen - Let's all gingery touch our sword tips!!!

Amen. Square peg jammed into a round hole. Just doesn’t work. Would have loved to have had the chance to see what Dave could have done with this song. One of Sam’s misses for me.

Would love to hear Dave and or Sam take what Ed created on III and see if it still sounds like a different band with their lyrics and harmonies. Betting both would have knocked III out of the park.

Hard to believe Gary screwed up those songs so bad hearing the instrumentals. He simply wasn’t a good fit. Terrible actually…

The lyrics aren’t “cheese” IMO, they just suck. Not all songs can be unchained, mean street, 5150, Poundcake etc… Both Dave and Sam had occasional clunkers. Gary had almost nothing but clunkers!!
