Agreed on Poundcake and Runaround, but I like AFU, Summer Nights, and "5150" better with the vocals. But, as I said earlier, it is awesome to be able to hear all the little bits of genius that Ed and Al put into every track that sometimes was hidden by the vocals, in all eras.

With Balance, I really just find most of those tunes a tough listen anymore because of Sam's screeching and straining on that record. For sure I prefer that album be instrumentals.

I havent listened to Cabo Wabo yet, but I don't think I will like that one as much without vocals. Humans Being I prefer the vocals except for it was cool to hear Ed's guitar without the "shine on" part.

Regarding HB... I prefer the stripped version... but kept waiting for Sams yell after the solo section. Still got the blood pumping anyway but that yell with the build up is choice bloody for me.

Could I hear Ed's vocals part in the last half or is that just my brain? Ed's growl bg vocals and Sams yell... leave all the rest of the words on the cutting room floor.

    I think you're right.

In some cases I believe these to be actual multi-tracks, especially VH songs that were in the video game. But others have had the vocals stripped via a DAW (just guessing), and that is not a perfect way of doing it.
If I don't respond to you it means I have you on ignore, which means you are a douchenozzle.

I always liked Sam's "warped" vocals during the verses and also Ed's "we're just humans..humans being" vocal during the outro. But the "shine on, shine on" part definitely is not missed by me.

This guy on his page says what he did with each song in the description. I don't think these are the multi tracks from the Guitar Hero game. A lot of them he says he used Ultimate Vocal Remover v5, whatever that is.

When you get elite bands with elite musicianship such as VH, Zep, RUSH, The Who, the Police, TOOL, etc their music almost always stands completely on its own without vocals, no matter how good the vocals or lyrics or harmonies might be. Great players playing great music always sounds awesome.

It's still really cool like this. Hard to believe there is probably pristine non vocal versions on some format somewhere. Val's thumb drive with the Kolacky cookie recipe.

But to say that Ed’s playing sounded sloppy with vocals but sounded amazing without vocals, makes absolutely zero sense to me. I don’t even see how that’s aurally possible. Vocals don’t change the guitar parts have been laid down to tape.

Nonetheless, it’s all subjective. I realize this. Everybody’s ears and perceptions are different.

I’ve always recognized that song as one that showed off Ed’s playing ability. He rips on that track.

And blaming Gary for VH III’s lack of success is ridiculous. The music on that album did not sound like Van Halen.

I couldn’t begin to imagine Dave or Sam singing anything on Year to the Day let alone countless other tunes on the albums.
I gotta say this, because I embarrassed myself on an earlier post: I thought the instrumental versions sounded cleaner than the regular versions, because, truth be told, with the exception of Fire, it's been years since I had listened to III - and from memory, I didn't have a favorable opinion of certain spots. Tonight, after re-listening to the album version of III, it smacked me in the head: my remembrance of what I thought of III, colored my opinion. Heretofore, my thinking was: "the instrumental version sounds cleaner than my recollection of what III sounds like, therefore the instrumental version must be better;" my memory served to guide my opinion, instead of reality.

It was stupid on my part; no big deal, but I had to make this correction - LOL.

I listened to Year To The Day instrumental yesterday. WOW, really some phenomenal playing by Ed on that one, particularly the intro.

Also listened to Cabo Wabo and, yep, I prefer that one with vocals.

And Beats Workin...that is one HEAVY tune. It is still my 2nd favorite tune on ADKOT, but whoa, the instrumental version sounds waaaay heavier. Just great work by all three Halens on that one.

Year To The Day was always my favorite song off of III. The instrumental might have made it one of my favorites of all time!
