Perhaps I'm in the minority but, to me, one of the most exciting things to come to light in VH land over the years was the instrumental tracks VHND posted years back. I believe they were Not Enough and Big Fat Money. They were subsequently taken down but I loved them. I love hearing all the lost sounds that are unearthed when the vocals aren't obscuring them. Though both Dave and Sam are great in their own ways, I would love to hear the VH catalog sans vocals. That would be my ideal box set.

When all those first came out I listened to them almost exclusively for weeks. Such a great new way to hear the same old thing.

The tracks off of III sound much, much, better, and the music sounds a lot more like it came from Ed.

Holy crap, you're right. I'm listening to One I want and it sounds like something Dave belongs on.

That's a great find. However, speaking of Big Fat Money, you can clearly hear vocals. Sammy is clearly audible right after the solo up to the end. I sent a message to the guy who uploaded this stuff and asked him for a fixed reupload.

    Meanwhile:

"If you ever speak to me like that again, you better be wearing a cup" - EVH, 1996

"Stupid neighbors called the cops/Now the party's over/Angry housewife wants my name/Tell her it's 'Ben Dover"

Sammy Hagar made Van Halen even better. Deal with it.

Hey Jungle Drummer, if you see this, maybe you could be kind enough and see what VH3 songs supposedly didn't have Al on them? You can tell better on these of course.

DWD and FA don't sound like it from what I can tell (just going off of his unique sound). YTTD and BOTB did sound like it, and obviously WY/OIW/FITH are yays and "Once" is a nay. Couldn't find "Josephina" which sounds like a nay anyways. And of course HMSI is his best work since "Hot for Teacher."

Pretty much of an opinion if a song sucked, it wasn't because of the music.

I could listen to this stuff as is.

After a few listens, it's clear that Gary ruined those songs. The music was fine. That's a real shame.

I don't want to get flamed for this but, with the vocals removed, it's clear why Ed was so upsets at III's reception. The music is really inspired and some of his finest writing. Also, whereas many early VH songs are predominantly a (absolutely killer) riff repeated over and over till the bridge and solo sections, the III material feels like complete compositions. They're far more complex. Without You is overlong and disjointed with vocals but completely epic as an instrumental and I cant stop listening to Dirty Water Dog and One I Want. That groove! Yes, Gary was a mistake, but the Ed's biggest mistake was pursuing a third singer at all. III should have been an instrumental album. I fully believe that's what Ed really wanted. Really miss that guy BUT hearing III as it was meant to be heard is like getting a new VH album filled with Ed's most personal and diverse music. For that I am grateful.

One thing: I know Ed was playing a lot of Cello in the III era and I know he played some violin when he was younger. Is Ed playing the Strings on How Many Say I?

III was an Eddie van Halen solo album with Gary Cherone as the singer, Alex van Halen on drums (on some tracks) and Michael Anthony (on some tracks) on bass.

Vocals or no vocals, most of that music sounded nothing like VH. Gary wasn’t the sole reason that album didn’t sell.

It was also an amalgamation of things leading up to it that had people disinterested.

Teasing the fans with Roth after losing a long time singer, in Hagar, before hiring somebody completely different has to go down as one of the most ludicrous personnel decisions a band has made in the history of rock music.
