You know what’s funny at the time is Van Halen II didn’t get the greatest reception, and a lot of people actually did see it as a let down from the first album. Now of course I was too young to remember any of that but I have talked to some people who were around then who were big fans and they’ve said that. I’m sure you guys probably won’t agree but I have definitely heard that.

There was a guy in my math class in the fall of 1979 who was a couple of years older than me. I was a sophomore and he was a senior. He knew I was a big Van Halen fan and he thought VH II was "fake" compared to the debut. He didn't care for the pop-oriented stuff like Dance The Night Away, Women In Love and Beautiful Girls.

My first taste of the VHII album was literally the day after I saw them at the beginning of the 1979 tour at the LA Coliseum for the California World Music Festival. I had bought the album at the “Rock n Roll Swap Meet” they had going on through the festival weekend at the next door LA Sports Arena but couldn’t give it a listen until I got home from the show.

Live and bunched together with the 1st album cuts, the new songs held their own. Listening to the record itself though, it did take quite a few listens to warm up to it. But by late Summer, I was burning out the cassette tape on my boombox at the beach.

Should NEVER have opened with You're No Good. That just gave them a hill to climb from that point on. Fortunately, the rest of album is A++.

YNG is a great song. Awesome riff by Ed that really bears no resemblance to earlier versions of the song, one of his best solos with the first time on record we ever heard his cascading palm scrape harmonic, a great bass solo intro by Mike, the first time on record that we get to hear Al play Octobans, and some of the greatest call and response vocal/guitar ever put on tape by any duo by Dave and Ed. No idea why there are a few people that dislike the song as much as they do.

I don't skip it, but for me it's the worst song on the album and you should never start an album with its worst song. I love all the VH covers, but this is my least favorite cover of theirs. One of my least favorite CVH songs, to be honest. You list a lot of cool things, but for me, You're No Good lacks a spark.

Thats cool. To each their own. But to me it is BY FAR a better tune than either PW or DITS as far as covers. And it is a way better song than Little Dreamer, for me, from the debut. I like it better than YRGM and Jamie's Cryin as well.

Incredibly unpopular opinion I know, but for me Beautiful Girls is my least favorite tune on II. That speaks to the amazing consistency of that record, one of the greatest sophomore albums ever.

I guess some people maybe thought it sounded too similar to the 1st album. It had a cover tune, it even had another instrumental with the tapping--Spanish Fly. They were still using the 25 song demo to pull songs from. They also had to crank it out fast. It was going to be virtually impossible to duplicate the success of the 1st album, which was groundbreaking. I think Van Halen II is awesome even if you factor in all that stuff. But like Eddie said in so many interviews, they hate you if you try to be different, and they hate you if you stay the same. You can't win with some people.

By the time I first heard the album, it had been out many years and was already considered a classic, so I never knew what the initial reactions were. My favorites are Outta Love, Women in Love, and Somebody Give Me a Doctor.

As for their worst cover tune...for me, its Dancing in the Streets and its not even close. When that song was on the radio and I was at a stop light, I would sink down in my seat. I thought it was embarrassing for Van Halen.

Kinda hard to follow up the debut. Anything was going to fall short.

I love VHII, but I could understand fans in 1979 being slightly disappointed by it compared to I. (that is not to say I'm disappointed by II)

I dig You're No Good, although Somebody Get Me A Doctor or Light Up The Sky might have been better as the opening track.
