Can We Put This To Rest? Did Mike Lay Down Tracks Post 1984
I know that EVH laid most bass tracks down on III, but there's a persistent rumor which says that EVH laid down the majority of bass tracks on their albums, 1984 and onward.
I don't play, unfortunately; can someone tell me what they're hearing on the albums? Are the bass tracks coming from a guitarist who plays bass, or is what we're hearing a bass player who plays bass?"It wasn't Ed's playing that inspired me, it was his spirit. The playing was merely a manifestation of that spirit." - Speedway
"when I heard Me Wise Magic on I-81 in 1996...I am thinking "what a fucking waste of time the last ten years were for Van Halen." - Dave's Dreidel
"Eddie may have passed, but he will NEVER die!"

I don’t think we’ll ever know for sure. I do think Mike played on the vast majority up till VH3.
But for example, I’m fairly certain that’s Ed playing bass on Right Now. It’d make sense as he would know how to navigate the bass notes from his left hand of the piano parts. The tone and mix of the bass is a bit more forward compared to the other tunes on the record as well.

I'm still wondering if there even is bass on tracks like "Jump" and "I'll Wait", or is what i'm hearing as bass coming from the keyboards?
