70s all the way. Never mind inflation or gas crisis. Music was stellar not just rock. Electric Jazz and even Disco baby

I like the 80s but I'm born in 74 so I guess that just makes sense. You're likely to love the stuff you grew up with. Personally, I loved all the hair metal stuff of the 80s. I know most thought it was corny and over the top but that was part of the fun.

The 70s gave us Led Zeppelin, vintage Aerosmith, Bon Scott era AC/DC the first two Van Halen albums, Deep Purple's Machine Head, Montrose, UFO and Ozzy era Sabbath.

The 80s gave us Moving Pictures, Heaven And Hell, Blizzard of Oz, Diary Of A Madman, Back In Black, WACF, FW, DD and 1984 from VH, Blackout, Love At First Sting and Appetite For Destruction.

Lots of great hard rock from both decades. Tough call.

I remember making a list a long time ago of every album I owned & the years that I owned the most from was 1980 and 1981, so by that method, '80s for me.

That being said, the '70s birthed the vast majority of the bands that I listen to, soooo, it's really a toss up.

Not a legit answer, but I’d say 70’s through 1985.

Ha - maybe short version of my long answer, Rokgtar!

I love both decades. I own more albums from the ‘80s than I do the ‘70s. Even though the title specifically states “hard rock”, it’s hard for me to categorize music that I like - it’s just music that I like regardless whether it’s hard, soft, synth heavy, countryesque, disco, soul, ponderous, snappy, whatever, etc. so while I have more albums from the ‘80s, I feel like the ‘80s started to peter out half way through. Seems we lost so many bands around ‘83, ‘84, 85, where as the ‘70s were strong all the way through. Another thing in the ‘70s favour is I prefer the ‘70s output of Aerosmith, KISS, McCartney, Queen and ZZ Top to their ‘80s output and I also feel Cheap Trick’s best records were in the ‘70s, though I like their ‘80s records as well. Foreigner’s first two albums from the ‘70s stand head and shoulders above anything that came after in the ‘80s. So - ‘70s!

If the question was all rock, or all music in general, the 70s take it easily, but... if it's HARD ROCK, the answer is IMO really the 80's, esp the early portion of it. There is a sweet spot that happens at that stage.
