They've tried everything in their power up to this point including taking it to the Supreme Court and have lost every step of the way. The only thing stopping a trial from taking place in January is whether they can put together a settlement offer that will make this go away. The lawyers representing STL have said they are not settling no matter what, so it's going to happen and the NFL will lose because the evidence is so heavily weighted against them. Whether they are able to win in appeals is a different story, but it's bound to make them very uncomfortable and make for some entertaining reading.
CNN may think my opinion matters, but you shouldn't.

I'll believe it when they say the money has left his bank account.

    Until then, nope.

It's amazing to me how certain coaches just can't figure out how to manage the end of a half/game.

With all the money on the line, you would think they'd spend money for one guy to have the job of:

    Call time out at 0:48.
Remember, our kicker likes the left hash mark.
You have time for one more run to try and get closer.
Let the clock run down to 0:05 and then call time out.

    Shit like that.

Can someone please explain to me why coaches insist on going for 2 to go up by 6 instead of 5? I've seen this happen repeatedly and it has almost always backfired.

Saturday night, UCLA scored a TD with 7:27 remaining in the game to go up 30-26. I told my wife before they even scored that I bet they will stupidly go for 2 instead of kicking the extra point, which they did. So, now instead of being up 31-26, they were up 30-26. Fresno State then went down and scored a TD with 2:55 remaining in the game and kicked the extra point to go up 33-30. If UCLA had kicked the extra point on their previous TD, that would have forced Fresno State to go for 2 after their TD to try and increase their lead to 3 points. UCLA then scored another go ahead TD with 54 seconds remaining in the game to go up 37-33 after converting the extra point. Sure enough, UCLA's sieve like defense then allowed Fresno State to march down the field in 40 seconds for the game winning TD.

If UCLA had simply kicked the extra point to go up 31-26. then the honus would have been on Fresno State to have to convert a 2 point conversion on their next TD. The success rate on the two point conversion is below 50%, so why would you attempt it when you don't need it and can force the other team to try it later in the game? So, taking it further, if UCLA had been up 31-26 and Fresno State had failed on the two point conversion, which they would have definitely attempted after their TD to go up by 3, UCLA would have only been down 31-30 instead of 33-30 on their last drive. UCLA could have then just run the clock down as low as possible and kicked a chip shot game winning FG and not allowed their horrible defense to blow the game.

I don't even know how to play chess, but these football coaches can't even play chutes and ladders when it comes to thinking ahead and using simple math.

But you said UCLA had a "sieve-like" defense. Maybe they figured Fresno would simply convert the 2-pt attempt. lol

Lol. I don't think Chip Kelly even thought of that.

I saw Don Shula do the same thing when he was still coaching the Dolphins and it cost him the game against the Bengals. It only makes sense to go for 2 to go up by 6 instead of 5 if you're hoping the other team misses the go ahead extra point if they score a TD and you don't think you are going to get the ball back with enough time to even get into FG range.

If the NFL loses a case in court that big it will change the league but I doubt it. Baltimore messed around for years trying eminent domain....did not work.

I think the idea is to make sure the other team needs to score a TD to beat you. They can't get two FGs and a stop and win the game if you're up 6. With about 7 minutes remaining, that's a very real possibility. They also have to convert an extra point if they score a TD to beat you, and in college those are not always guaranteed like they are in the pros.

The funny thing is that in the heat of moment most coaches can't think through these things logically because there is so much going on, so they have a cheat sheet on their play calling sheet that basically tells them when to do what based on the lead, the numbers, etc. Of course what that ends up missing is the flow of the game and the ability of each side of the ball to convert. That could change the equation, but it's almost impossible to prepare for on a spreadsheet so they can't prep ahead of time for it.
CNN may think my opinion matters, but you shouldn't.

I have to agree. Some kind of mystery settlement or some other BS for it to go away.

Sorry St Louis ..... but for me it is like the Rams never left LA now. Same as it ever was. Did they go to StL for a few years? I guess, doesn't matter now...lol..

Lions last championship Ike was president. Bobby Layne was the qb. And booze would be available to all who asked at his locker.

I wouldn't expect anyone from a large market to care because it likely won't effect their team, but any fan of an NFL team that isn't in a top 10 market should be paying attention. Buffalo, Jacksonville, etc. The NFL will jump ship the minute someone offers them more money or an uptick in franchise value no matter what you try and do to stop it. Again, "so what?" you might ask. Well, the NFL put these rules into place to protect themselves from antitrust lawsuits. If they followed those rules the Rams would still be in St. Louis. If they admit they aren't rules they have to follow, they just opened themselves up to antitrust lawsuits.

There's all sorts of ripple effects from this that will be felt for years to come.
CNN may think my opinion matters, but you shouldn't.

Put me in the camp that the NFL will have to do some out of court settlement on this one. It hasn't been getting as much pub but that is due to the networks trying to appease the shield. A lot of revenue comes with those TV contracts. However its gaining traction and until its stopped, it will continue to move on. I know most here don't care about small market teams but you are right. The NFL simply can hold them hostage and do.
