Billy Sheehan used to have some negative stuff to say about Dave regarding his exit from the band. I remember him saying that there was a "note police" telling him what to play or not to play, that's why he bailed right before Skyscraper.

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

Yep. Even while Billy was disappointed with the direction Dave AND Vai took on Skyscraper, he has said in multiple interviews that he wished the EEAS band had continued on a lot longer than it did.

Not trying to say DLR was a saint, how he treated Mike in certain instances was childish and was in actuality bullying behavior.

But it seems DLR was pretty cool to the EEAS band.

I'm sure Dave had his share of diva moments.

I read or heard a long time ago that it was Steve Vai who dialed back Billy's playing on that album and that's who actually made him mad.

If I remember correctly, at first, it was Billy and Dave, then Billy, Steve and Dave.

But as it started to become the Dave and Steve show, Billy was like WTF? Wish he had stuck it out, but in retrospect, I think it is clearly obvious that it wasn't meant to last. Steve and Billy were hired guns, and as soon as something better came along, they would be gone.

DLR was a springboard for them. God bless'em.

Default Billy Sheehan on How David Lee Roth Treated Musicians He Hired

I’d say Zappa was the springboard for Steve.

Vai was already getting popular and critical acclaim in 83’ after he released his first solo effort. Bands were knocking.

Three years with Dave didn’t really make Steve Vai.

I don't think anyone outside of a very few music nerds knew who Steve Vai was before Eat'em and Smile came out.

More of a guitar nerd myself. His name was definitely out there, but for the everyday Joe music listener...probably weren't familiar with Vai.

Not entirely accurate but not really worth debating.

Frank Zappa wasn’t a nobody. If you could hang with Frank at 18, you were known by more than a few.

Ozzie and Harriet probably hadn’t heard of him before Dave, though. That’s true. Hell, they still might not know who he is.

Vai was gonna have a career with or without Dave, is the point. Being with Roth for three years didn’t open that many doors for him that wouldn’t have opened anyways.

Frank Zappa say what you want about him he could find talent and not just Vai. Some of his songs suck others like Black Napkins are incredible.

Not when your “competition” has collectively said Dave became the monster they all struggled with AND they came out first with the new record minus Dave and we’re killing it. Dave’s smart. He comes out like he was in VH’s success and he’s one record and done, IMO.

To be honest, in those days, bullying was accepted behavior. I think even the term "bullying" didn't exist yet. People who had power were expected to abuse it.
