    Default Joe Satriani's Other Half

Personally, I think a couple things were at play when it came to Sam not wanting to continue with CF.

    1. He likes being “the boss”...”the man”....And he wasn’t that, in CF. Both Satch and Chad had very successful careers on their own up till that point. They didn’t “need” Sammy Hagar. They’re nobody’s “employee”. Those two guys would be the last to say that though, because I think they are genuinely stand-up guys.

In the Circle and The Wabos, Sam’s the man. He’s the boss. He says jump, and the others ask how high?

    2. And it was already touched upon briefly....Sam was getting self-conscience about his lack of lyrical creativity next to a wildly creative guitar virtuoso like Satch. I think Satch was throwing so much material at him that he didn’t like the pressure.

In The Circle and The Wabos, they record when Sam wants. How Sam wants. And where Sam wants. He writes the songs, and the others come in after and contribute.

Just my thoughts as to why he wouldnt carry on with such a talented, great band.

And if none of those are true, and he really didn’t want to continue CF because it “cost him too much money” to record an album....than he really is a fuckwad.

I’m sorry to be so blunt, but he really is if he truly believes that.

    A few thoughts:

    1. did Hagar really say Chickenfoot was too expensive, or are we speculating? either way, I think it's common knowledge that recording an album is not very expensive anymore, but marketing and distributing is.

    2. I agree that Sammy has his own brand and maybe Joe & Chad don't want to play in a VH/Montrose/Sammy Hagar cover band

    3. If the writers block thing is serious, why not just let someone else write the lyrics and/or melodies?

    4. I agree with the whole pressure thing. I think we can look back at the parting ways with VH, and one of the things that Eddie complained about was that Hagar was taking off on various trips and going down to Cabo. Hagar is very much into the "fun" of it, and when it seems more like work, he gets burnt out and maybe even difficult to work with

Yes, he did. On more than one occasion.

"I don't see any reason to make a new record… I mean, I love making music. But doing it on CHICKENFOOT's level means spending a half million on a record. We write and record for six months. It's a lot of work, and then to not sell many records, it's disappointing. I don't like being disappointed. I like winning." - Sammy Hagar

Yes there could be 1000 reasons why CF isn't a band anymore. The cost of making an album isn't one of them. Even if I am wrong its likely 789 or something on the list of 1000.

Its ok. However that excuse is akin to saying Dave sounded bad live in 2015 due to the AC or something like that.

Mitch, I like your 2-point summary above and think it's probably close to being dead on. I would add that CF not being able to book any venues in the US larger than Sam could book solo was a major issue. If CF was booking arenas, I think Sam would have felt very different about things. He was left with only an "artistic" payoff for all of the difficulty related to being in a such a band.

    The artistic payoff of CF.

Two solid albums of quality rock.

    No artistic payoff since.

If they did a third Chickenfoot album, they wouldn’t need to do covers etc. there would be more than enough material for a live show.

That being said, they did covers in their live set anyway. Did Satch publicly say he wouldn’t do VH or Sammy solo covers?

I have a hard time believing that the Circle sells more tickets than a Chickenfoot original lineup supporting a New Album would. Maybe I’m totally wrong, but I would rather see Chickenfoot than The Circle. Especially if they did a VH cover or two. Joe would get way closer than Vic to the original version.

BOOM! There's the problem right there. People always expecting CF to play anything other than CF.

Anyway... theres an article or video smewhere where Sam said he would have liked to have done 2 songs each from VH, RHCP, Joe, Sam solo, etc.... but I believe it was Joe that said no... stick to CF tunes and maybe an obscure cover like Space Trucking... which is kinda funny cause Joe toured with DP once upon a time... but it wasn't a Joe song.

    Oh well.

If anything the opposite could be true. I saw CF in 2009 and 2012 at a 2,400 seat venue. The last time I saw the Circle was in 2017 and it was at a 14,000 capacity shed. Granted it wasn't full but there were at least 7-8,000 I'd say.

Yea, my opinion at the time, by reading between the lines was that Sammy (and the rest of CF) put their heart and soul into the second album. I don't think it sold nearly as well as the first one, and that was a huge disappointment to Sammy. I think he wanted it to go platinum, and he worked his ass off, and it sold considerably less. I think he figured it was fun, but not going anywhere, and he would rather go back to solo work (which he just said in an interview recently).

Honestly, that first album was stellar. The second album was good, but doesn't have as much staying power. Maybe when Vegas is over, Sammy gets the boys together for a couple of tunes available for download and does a mini-tour to put that to bed before he's 75. Just my opinion, but I never see anything more than that happening.

Since 2012 they could easily have released an EP or a couple of singles like The Struts without a big commitment. They could have toured as an opener for a larger act, they have the connections.
