In terms of “front-men”, Dave’s 6 year run with VH probably puts him up there with the greatest ever. Top 10, for sure.

Dave’s career as a whole makes him more of a punchline than a legend. I agree wholeheartedly.

SAMMY HAGAR Says EDDIE VAN HALEN Wanted To Reconnect And ‘Make Some Noise’

Sammy Hagar recently spoke with Washington Post reporter Geoff Edgers in a July 30 Instagram Live chat where the “Red Rocker” spoke about how he and Eddie Van Halen mended their relationship prior to the guitarist’s death.

“When I [reconnected] with Eddie four or five months before he died, we got together and we kind of made amends,” he said. “It wasn’t, like, ‘Oh, you’ve gotta apologize for this.’ When I talked to him the first time after all of ’em years, I said, ‘Hey, Eddie, I’ve been trying to get a hold of you. I called your brother.’ He [said], ‘Why didn’t you call me?’ I’m going, ‘Well, it’s a good point.’ And I said, ‘I wanted to make sure you were cool with me getting in contact. I didn’t want you to call me some names and hang up the phone and stir the whole thing back up.’ And he said, ‘No, no, no.’ He said, ‘I love you, man.’ And I realized at that point that he had elevated his whole thing. He had come to peace with everything. He knew he was sick. And it was so great to contact the guy when he was in that state of mind. If I had got him six months earlier, it probably would have been, ‘You said this. You said that.’ He was totally above it all and elevated. And, man, I’m so glad that that happened at that time, because if it wouldn’t have, if we had never made peace and he would have passed the way he did, I would feel terrible. I wouldn’t be able to talk to you about it. I wouldn’t know what to say. So I’m so grateful that we connected. And he said, ‘Hey, let’s make some noise.’ He goes, ‘I’ve got a lot of work to do on myself this year. You ain’t gonna believe it. I’ve been fighting this stuff for 15 years. And now I’ve got this big thing on my neck and my throat right now. I’ve gotta get it all straightened out. And next year, you and I have gotta make some noise. We made some great music together, and I wanna do it again.’ I was just, like, ‘Yes.’ I said, ‘Eddie, that ain’t what I’m calling you about. I’m calling about to see if you’re okay.’ But hearing those things really made me able to handle his death. ‘Cause it’s still tough as hell. I miss the guy.”

Hagar also discussed the musical chemistry he had with Eddie, saying: “We wrote all those songs together. It ain’t, like, ‘Oh, we wrote a couple of songs together.’ We wrote every VAN HALEN song from my era, from ’85 to ’95, and then three more on the [2003-05] reunion thing. We wrote all them songs together. You don’t write songs like that with a real musician and real musicians getting together — you don’t phone that in. You don’t do it by e-mail. No. We sat in rooms together, him and I, and wrote those songs and went and sang them, and he coached me through things he might hear… I miss that. There’s nobody like that.”

Last November, Eddie’s son Wolfgang revealed that his father had contemplated a “kitchen-sink tour” that would have included Anthony, as well as both Hagar and David Lee Roth.

Eddie Van Halen died at St. John’s Hospital in Santa Monica, California due to complications from cancer.

I'm not belittling their legacy at all. I just don't believe that the average person holds DLR in high regard like we do. Those people remember the goofball from his videos. They don't know and understand how big a variable he was to VH's legacy.

Robert Plant, for example, gets plenty of respect and deservedly so. DLR, I'm afraid, isn't close to that level. WE think Roth is legendary. I don't believe the masses do. That's all I'm saying.

They are all in the RNRHOF. They did well for themselves.

If Dave wanted more attention given to him as a lyricist, he could've recorded a full album of acoustic versions of his songs, instead of doing goofy stuff like no holds BBQ and the bluegrass thing.

CVH Dave WAS the last of the great classic front men. There hasn't been another one since. Whether the general public knows it is pointless.

For major bands, Axl Rose is the only other one I can think of.
If I don't respond to you it means I have you on ignore, which means you are a douchenozzle.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

True but to base his worth on that was always going to be something with an expiration date. Dave now is old, which still beats the alternative. He also suffers from a relative lack of filmed performance during his heyday. There is no full concert, multi-camera long-form video of Dave at his peak. So "frontman Dave" only exists in the memories of the people who saw him live at that time. That's maybe why his legacy is on shakier grounds than other frontmen. You want peak Freddie Mercury? You got Live Aid, you got Wembley, you got Montreal, etc. Not the case for Dave.

Just imagine if there was proper footage of a young Eddie Van Halen? Sure we have the pro shot Diver Down shoes in South America and Largo but what about a video showing them during WACF or a full FW tour? Pro shot?

I do agree that the most important part of the bands history has little footage.

Are we sure that there isn't actually a bunch of live footage of CVH collecting dust at 5150?

That would be the only thing from the vault that I’d care about.

Live performances that have never seen the light of day being professionally released.
