This. To someone who's never heard anything by them, everything may as well be either a hit or a deep cut, they won't know the difference.

Disagree. History proves people are prone to catchy.

Jump is more catchier than IASR.

McDonald's is more popular than Fuddruckers.

It's OK the masses do not care about ITO. Only Panama/HFT.

They care about Jump. Ed succeeded.

We hate that fact. Oh well.

You guys are basing your choice(s) being musicians or long time fans that know the entire Van Halen catalog. To the normal listener, those types of songs aren't going to get the same reactions as they do from some or most of us here.

I thought about ICM as well. Sure, it's a cover, but, let's face it, VH made it their own. It's a VH song.

There are so many fine representations that check all the boxes--Unchained, I'm the One, HFT, ICM, Panama, IASR, etc.

I also think it would depend on the taste of the virgin VH listener. If it was someone who was more into the heavier stuff, I might HFT or I'm the One, or On Fire.
Maybe someone more into pop stuff or country, it would be something else.

"Mean Street" is an excellent choice. First they get that noodling that introduces them to The Man, then the "Voodoo Queen" riff kicks in and who's not gonna dig that?

I think we’re basing it off of the fact the songs are stellar.

Why would somebody who had never heard VH before like Jump or Panama more than Simple Rhyme or Girl Gone Bad or Light Up The Sky?

I guess I’m just confused by this line of thought. If we were saying Balutchitherium I’d say you’d have a point.

Personally, there’s not a snowball’s chance in hell I’d play anybody who had never heard VH, any of their most famous radio songs.

They’re the tenderloins. The flavour’s in the ribeyes.

Why Can't This Be Love, Mean Street & Judgement Day are the first 3 songs I usually play. WCTBL because I love everything about the song. Mean Street & JD mainly to show how awesome Ed is.

Just imagine all the movie folks who went to see Twister & heard Humans Being in the movie without knowing anything about who composed the music.

It might've had a very real impact for certain folks. Thinking to themselves..." Damn! , The movie was stupid but that tune was awesome! "

It's why music placement in movies has impact. Just think of Pulp Fiction for example...Neil Diamond's " Girl You'll Be a Woman Soon" ....dynamite tune or what....would we have heard it if not for the movie.

How many younger folks think of The Who as the band with that theme tune from the Criminal TV show.

Anyhoo- I'd pick Ain't Talkin Bout Love or Panama or Unchained or I'm The One or On Fire or House Of Pain or Somebody Get Me a Doctor or Mean Street or Light Up The Sky or Dance The Night Away or Romeo Delight or And The Cradle Will Rock or The Full Bug or Runnin With the Devil or Drop Dead Legs....

Oh- Imagine how many Family Guy veiwers first heard VH from watching The Family Guy....first Drop Dead Legs & later on the whole episode about 1984...

Pop culture media is a very valuable asset for introducing music to new audiences.

Never assume anything or take it for granted.

...on second thought, maybe just pop in Van Halen and start 'em from the very first track! If those horns ain't a way to introduce the saviour of rock, I don't know what is!

Yup. Once it starts, if they have good taste, they won't want it to end.
