"LWI" would sound better to me today if Ed had played a grand piano rather than the synthesizer--which, of course, would have been unheard-of in 1985/86. I recently saw a video of Sam and Ed performing "LWI" at a Neil Young benefit show in the early 90s, Ed playing piano and Sam singing. That piano-and-voice performance really shows what a good song "LWI" is.
Actually Ed did play grand piano on this one. I read an interview with Eddie that said that he played the entire song through on grand piano without a click track. He said Alex overdubbed his drums to that, which was tough as he said his time wasn't perfect, which made it hard for Alex. All the synth stuff was overdubbed after. I like the way it sounds but maybe the could have brought the original piano track up a hair to make it stand out more. It's pretty low in the mix but you can definitely hear it especially in the intro and chrouses when Eddie hits the low C. I actually thought it was great when Sammy would play guitar in concert. I loved Eddie's keyboard playing so I was more than happy to get to see him play keyboards live. I also think Sammy's solo was great. He knew damn well that he can't do Eddie on guitar and he just played it the way he felt it. I thought sammy's guitar solo was pretty soulful actually. Besides people probably would have ripped Sammy a new one if he tried to copy eddie note for note.

It's also pretty easy to push blame on Sammy for some of the ballad stuff, but I would be curious to know how Dave would have even approached a song like this. It probably would have been shelved by Eddie as I just don't think Dave would have wanted to do something like that. I think once Eddie built 5150, it gave him total freedom to explore any idea that was in his head, keyboard or guitar. Adding Sammy may have upset a lot of die hard fans but for Eddie, it allowed him to grow musically. Like it or not (I love it), Dreams is an incredible song that never would have happened with Dave.

I would disagree and say that Love Walks In is a very simple song as well.

It is in C Major, the opening/chorus riff is the beat to death I-vi-IV-V chord progression. I do like how Ed uses the diminished vii a good bit in the song, it's effective, especially for the hook riff when Sam sings "place in time...all your might...milky way", that's a nice little hook using the diminished, which a lot of songwriters won't use.

But as songs go, it's pretty easy. I'm a hack guitar player, and outside of the solo, I can play along with it. One of the few VH songs that to me can be played by your average campfire acoustic player.

One thing that is never really mentioned when it comes to the 5150 songs and if they were presented to Dave is this. What would Ted think or do with said songs? Ted was the 5th member of VH at that time, kind of their Bob Rock He had influence in the band and with Dave. Now maybe due to his resistance to Jump and its success, his influence with the 1984 follow up would be under more strain. I can see Eddie pulling "well you thought Jump was trash and look at what happened..." Maybe Ted would have heard something else with some of the songs and the final result could have been a bit different?

As far as DD said he is right about the complexity. LWI isn't a hard song. It and Dreams are very similar with both being in same keys and share some same chord progressions. This isn't Fantasy by Earth Wind and Fire.

I like LWI. I like Drive. I don't think adding keyboards makes something more complex. Eddie's work on guitar is a bit more complex than his keyboard work.

A lot of Earth Wind and Fire songs are masterclasses in songwriting.

Simple ain't a bad thing. To me, some of the greatest songs every written were three simple chords. Complexity doesn't always equate to a better product.

Complexity has nothing to do with a riff sounding great. It can, but it doesn't have to at all.

Love every note and musical decision on the first 9 records and ADKOT. It all has strong VH DNA sprinkled through it IMO.

It's only Balance that bothers me in many different places and ways.

CSLY, NE, and BF$ should have never been released. Only songs in the catalog I say that about with the exception of VH3.

I think Ted Tepleman didnt get "Ed the keyboard player." So it made sense for him not to be involved post-1984 (except FUCK). It did NOT make sense to not call him back for ADKOT. I guess he still hasn't made good with Dave.

    You guys and CSLY.

It's like it challenges your manhood or something. Get over it. It's a great pop song. None of you on this site will ever create a song that good.

5 minutes of Ed's time and he chugs that out.

No one on this site will ever write a song as good as EVH. Well no shit Sherlock!

It's not an interesting song. More power to you that you like it, but from a songwriting point of view, it is extremely generic. Another 1-6-4-5 chord progression, and when I heard Sam give an interview talking about how the song is from his ex wife's point of view about Sam...I was out.

Balance is actually my favorite Sam Halen record, but for me, this tune is a low point.

Not Enough is the ballad from Balance that is a much better song, in my humble opinion.

Yeah if you like CSLY that is fine but that song was solely created because they wanted a single on Balance to put out. Warner Brothers heard what they had written and didn't hear a single. Told them to write a single which they did in very short order. The inspiration behind the song wasn't because they loved it. It was to push units. To get on radio. Knowing that, it was hard for me to like it because it was done for the record company. Not for us fans.

Is it a good pop song? Yeah but its very generic. Yes I love Eddie's playing on it. Has good harms. I don't mind the lyrics but it was done only for the record company

I like the LWAN version better than the album version.. Sammy’s guitar work and vocals are top notch. A lot of emotion in his performance.

This song is especially heinous as it's right after the majestic glory of Seventh Seal! If you replace CSLY with Crossing Over, you have:

    Seventh Seal
    Crossing Over
    DTMWLCD
    Amsterdam

Probably the best "Side A" of any Sam Halen record!
