The Genius Of Alex Van Halen!

    Published on Jul 23, 2021

Alex Van Halen is one of the world's great drummers. There's no denying that. But just how incredible and groundbreaking he really was is what this video is all about.

Alex's powerful and dynamic drumming style and voice are instantly recognizable. And in this video were looking at 5 songs from Van Halen that simply wouldn't be the same without Alex's sensational talent.

In "Jump" we dig into the choices Alex is making to accompany Eddie's solo. The syncopation, the voicings; each element perfectly suits that moment of the song.

In "Panama" we're looking at an over-the-barline groove that everyone has heard and everyone loves.

In "Hot For Teacher" we break down this trademark groove that also happens to feature a Lamborgini exhaust!

Next, we dive into "Unchained" and how perfectly syncopated and displaced the kick and snare need to be in order to complement the guitar and vocals.

Lastly, we explore "Why Can't This Be Love" and how Alex began to push the boundaries with e-drums and include those "modern" sounds in their recordings and performances.

In conclusion, Alex is an absolute legend and deserves all the credit he can be given. And it should come as no surprise that his band "Van Halen" was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007.

So sit back and get ready to discover the genius of Alex Van Halen.

I love how these guys base their lists on only hits. It's like they've never heard the rest of the groups' work.

    This.

And LMFAO, WCTBL. Give me a fucking break. The only good that ever came out of that song was the tribal motif that Al eventually came up with for the "solo" section and outro when they played it live, but that isn't even on the original album version. If they felt they just had to highlight the dated Simmons sound from 5150, then do either "5150" or Get Up.

At least Jump does have some very cool playing on it, but even that was better live. In the Modern Drummer Legends magazine on Al that came out last winter, Al talks about how it was a conscious decision to not go too crazy with the fills during the solo section of Jump because they knew they had a potential crossover hit and they knew he could just go crazy when they played it live in concert. But they kept it tempered in the studio to be more "appealing" for mass radio play.

Drumeo have long been huge fans of AVH. But their instructional videos in general are some of the best out there. Some really terrific players at Drumeo.

For me, Alex's masterpiece is Girl Gone Bad. I'm not a drummer or anything, but goddamn. He drummed the fuck out of that song.

For me, outside of maybe Pleasure Dome, FUCK is down the list when discussing the best of AVH.
Balance isn't much higher up the list.

He played great on both albums, no doubt, but there wasn't as much for him to do as there was on other albums. When I think of the best of Alex, earlier songs always top my list (same with Ed). And don't forget ADKOT. Al had some good stuff on that one too.

One of his best for sure, and actually my favorite drum track on 1984, although HFT and HOP are master classes in drumming as well.

ADKOT, even though his kicks and snare shouldve been up a little more in the mix, was some of his most bombastic playing, especially considering he was 58 at the time.

you want people to watch the videos. If you start talking about songs that most people haven't heard, you won't get many views.
