Default The DLR Cast - Interview with Author, Musician, Director & Producer Frank Meyer

    Published on Jul 18, 2021

Part 2 of our interview with Frank Meyer, who has more David Lee Roth stories, talks about seeing the very first, open-to-the-public Van Halen reunion rehearsal on stage, covering Van Halen's "In A Simple Rhyme" (it's very cool, check it out), talking Van Halen with Eddie Spaghetti of the Supersuckers, meeting Eddie Van Halen at Dweezil Zappa's house, Eddie's infamous backyard party for a movie soundtrack, and much more.

You may have first known musician, author and producer Frank Meyer as the frontman for The Streetwalkin’ Cheetahs, but Van Halen die-hards may know him from his work on copy-editor and interviewer on photographer Neil Zlozower’s book "Van Halen: A Visual History 1978 – 1984." He has also interviewed David Lee Roth many times -- first time around for POPsmear Magazine -- and featured DLR in the book "On the Road with The Ramones."

Beauty is life when life unveils
    her holy face.

But you are life and you
    are the veil.

Beauty is eternity gazing at itself
    in a mirror.

    But you are eternity
    and you are the mirror.

    -Kahil Gibran

So none of the recorded songs from the 2000 sessions are complete versions because Dave requested that they stop the song in the middle each time so they could never be used formally without his permission/as an official VH release.

Between Ed, Dave and their lawyers, no wonder we only ever heard what they wanted us to hear...

One would think these would have been the first songs looked at for ADKOT unless used with Sam in 04.

A lot of trust between the band at that point in time, obviously.

    Must be Mike's fault.

He was there in 1996, 2000 and 2004, all train wrecks. They righted the ship once he was replaced by Wolf...Mike was the problem.

Tattoo was, honeybabysweetiedoll was, and China town is from the 1999 Cherokee album never released. As is a as a fresh song. And I think trouble with never is from 2000 as well. Just sounds like it would be from that time.

Could be wrong, but I don't believe they worked on Down in Flames in the 2000 sessions.

What is the 1999 Cherokee album? The only Cherokee album I know of is their first demo recordings from way back in the 70's.

I called HBSD back in '12 because of "Flex" and "'How About a Little Fire,' Scarecrow?" The chorus is the same as "Scarecrow" and the music is similar to "Flex." Maybe Dave wanted a "Crablouse"-like riff from Eddie and somehow talked him into it? Maybe that was one of the issues (like how he always wants dance music)?

Ray Luzier said both "Tattoo" and "She's the Woman" he heard. Remember they tried in 2000 and again in 2001. Maybe that was other session?

And also, Mike said in an interview (I think in The Inside) that they had a song with the working title "Hendrix Jam" for Balance that also sounded like "Are You Gonna Go My Way." That's gotta be "The Trouble with Never." Gotta be. And "As Is" was played at NAMM in '03 I believe was year. The riff and the boogie.

So that leaves one true original: "You And Your Blues."

However, someone pointed out here that the riff is from "The Wild Life." It's around one of the diner scenes with Lea Thompson.

I checked it out and he was right, and not in a HBSD/Act Like It Hurts-bullshit
    -way. Same chords, just slower.
