Just watch the press interviews they did for III. He was going on about how the prior two singers had LSD and yet he was the only one doing the talking in any of those interviews.

Ed wanted “his” band back. And he got it.

I think that album and the lack of love it received from the core VH fans was a huge blow to him and it created the, “Fuck it. I’ll just make music for myself in my studio” mentality.

Ed struck lightning twice with lead singers and was convinced he could do it a third time.

Makes me wonder.....who COULD they have found to have success with #3? Anyone at all?

I definitely don't see continuing where Van Hagar left off, or probably even being that big again....but maybe someone out there with a name, that might could have split the difference between what the did with Gary and where they were with Sam towards the end?

Not sure who that'd be, though.

I always thought Billy Idol would be great with VH.

Just stating my personal opinions like everyone else, including the few Sam fans that make sure and get their digs in. I for one was extremely grateful to have seen 7 great shows over those last 3 tours with Dave, and to also get a tremendous comeback record like ADKOT and to see the original founding frontman who slogged it out with the brothers in the clubs and climbed the mountain top with them be back in the band he co-founded where he always belonged. I'm certainly never going to make any apologies for feeling that way either.

Gary didn't fit in the long run, but the 3 album should not of been that terrible with the talent of Gary and Eddie, Alex, Mike.

If they just wrote rock n roll songs with a good producer. They would of been able to make another.

Interesting question regarding taking a year off. Who knows what would have happened.

I think a year would have lead into two years off. Maybe longer.

A year to get through the health issues, plus a year to relax and build strength. Sam would've put out a solo album, because, to his credit, he can't sit still. That would've most likely caused an issue, but perhaps it would get Ed's creative juices flowing. Then, perhaps new material around 98-99. Hopefully significant enough to kill Code War. Songs such as that, Salvation On Sand Hill and Year To The Day wouldn't exist, but take on a different, stronger, form. It would be less "in-your-face", more relaxed and more evolved. Perhaps their best work in a long time. And I really like Aftershock.

Maybe it would be enough for Val to get Ed to sober up and keep them together.

For once, I agree with Sam. It would've been good to take that time off.

I still think Coverdale could've done it. He could still sing in 1998.

Few bands make it with a singer change, even fewer with a third singer.
If I don't respond to you it means I have you on ignore, which means you are a douchenozzle.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

Gary could have done it too. If they just did a normal record. A straight up VH sounding, rock record. Which VH III was not.

Not advisable to change your formula right after hiring a new lead singer (your third, after two fan favourite singers).

It would be like if AC/DC decided to do prog-rock album after hiring Brian Johnson.

If they had said, ”Hey Gary...We’re going to make this record like the ones we did in the 70’s and 80’s. We’re gonna record it down and dirty; live in the studio. And then when we tour...we’re gonna bust out some of the Roth era material, if you’re cool with that...”

The next 10 years of the band’s existence would have been completely different. VH might have done the ‘impossible’. Remained successful with a third lead singer.

Everybody always says, "The mini tour they did with Gary before 3 came out was insane!" It got everybody excited because they were playing stuff from the whole catalogue. Even Gary says now he wishes they would've toured first to gel together because the follow up material was more them than just Ed's coming out record.

I still give Gary tons of credit for 3 because I can't think of too many other vocalists who could've have worked with Ed like that on what is basically his solo record.

I digress, a year off and I'd bet a Delorean we wouldn't have even gotten anything - just the implosion sooner.

Why? Somebody already said, DLR was kicked out of VH in 1980 and it took them another 5 years to get the message across - this is accurate! The only reason VH continued was because of WB's wanting more material and the machine itself. The work kept them going. My 2 cents, depreciated already.

There was a guy who posted on...I think the VHML that they were working with Coverdale and they even had a bunch of song titles....this was a long time ago so I don't remember exactly what he said but he was sure they were working together. it was strange cause it obviously didn't happen...makes me wonder why he would even do that....big waste of time.

I think the band should have taken a break after the Balance tour. Like Sam said, Ed was still having trouble with his hip, Al with his neck....they should have taken care of that stuff first and then consider doing something.

I always found the timing of them being in the studio was fucked up. then once they got in there everything really blew up (from what I've read). why did they need to do a song for twister? wouldn't band members health and well being be more important? I guess not when your initials are RD
