I didn't come around on 5150 till later with the Dreams video and Best of Both Worlds. Also LWAN, probably watched it a 1,000,000 times at this point. Now, I would say 5150 is better then EEAS. Because of Ed.

I did really like EEAS at the time. Huge fans of Vai and Billy S. Jammed that record A LOT. Shy Boy, Elephant Gun, Big Trouble, YR.

Both good albums on their own merits.

As someone else mentioned, get the EEAS band back together and I’m there.

Looking forward to ultimate classic rock's roundtable regarding 'For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge' vs. 'A Little Ain't Enough.'

Bought EEAS 35 years ago today and preferred it because of DLR. Took me some time before I listened to all of 5150 and it became my favorite of the two. Those heavy albums changed my music interests, but I never kicked Van Halen to the curb...those cd's didn't collect dust. I've watched LWAN many many times and still watch it every once in a while.

I'd say 1984 was a better year than '86 especially for VH, Maiden, Metallica and Priest, but it's all subjective.

1981 was another banner year for hard rock music. But I'm getting off topic. What were we talking about again?

I prefer 86 VH and Maiden...Metallica is a toss up. I can listen to RTL and MOP without skipping songs.

Back on topic....5150 is my favorite compared to EEAS. This isn't a pissing contest and I have no problem with others that see it the other way or prefer DLR over Sammy in Van Halen.

I’ve got to give it to 5150. Not a big fan of Sam in the band but 5150 has more substance than EEAS.

I’m also in for a Roth tour with the EEAS band…

Both albums were missing something. 5150 was missing Dave’s wit and attitude, Eat ‘Em And Smile was missing Ed, Alex and Mike. Vai never did much for me, and maybe Sheehan is technically better that Mike, but seeing as Dave has to do his own background vocals, guess he and Vai don’t have much to offer in that department. In the article they mentioned each singer singing the songs on the other album as if the lyrics were the same, but you know damn well that wouldn’t have happened! Dave could’ve handled “Dreams” - just with his own lyrics. I know I’ll probably get punted again for saying this, but it’s nothing more than “Jump” part II. The only one I could think he would have a problem coming up with something maybe would be “Love Walks In” - probably a slower tempo than “I’ll Wait” or “Hina”. But this is where I think Dave is wrong in his book - he says if he’d stayed he’d have had to come up with morose ballads or something like that, and I disagree - unless Edward was dictating what he wanted the songs to be about, Dave would’ve come up with something interesting, possibly even for your “Love Walks In” and “When It’s Love” type songs. We’ll never know…

Dave was the right man for Ed's early writing and Sam was the right man for Ed's writing from 5150 forward.

DLR and VH still had some great albums ahead of them. Great ideas on both EEAS and 5150. Would have loved at least 1 more before the breakup.
    Right here I say....

VH always wins for too many reasons to even mention. Mainly is because of the most obvious: the music and songs are simply better.

I will say, however, of the singers/derivatives, EEAS is about as close as it gets to competing with a Halen. Along with the first Montrose and Chickenfoot. And Pornograffitti.

    Both tours were great.

EEAS has aged better simply because of Templeman's production. 5150 sounds very dated now.
I think you're so right about this. EEAS still sounds great.

Both albums were great and I was super excited to have 2 great bands to listen to instead of one. Over time, I still can't pick a favorite, but neither exceed the 6 pack or Sammy's solo work.

Both of their follow-ups, however, were disappointing and at that point I kinda moved on to other bands.

I just pretend WCTBL and LWI don't exist, and 5150 becomes a damn great 7 song album with questionable production and really dated Simmons pads.

EEAS is a pretty good album with a couple skips, better lyrics and much better production.

Ed and Al are the difference makers though, even with Dave being such a superior lyricist.
