Default New 5150 Iconic Amps on Pre Order

Saw these on Reverb this morning. I’m going to grab one of these combos.

    https://reverb.com/marketplace?make=...shed_at%7Cdesc

The EVH 5150 Iconic Series satisfies the needs of gigging and recording guitarists craving that pure and powerful EVH tube tone, but at a more affordable price. Evolving from the revered EVH 5150III amplifiers, the Iconic Series delivers the searing sound and growling gain that Eddie Van Halen made famous throughout his groundbreaking career.

Designed by renowned amp engineer, James Brown, the 5150 Iconic Series 40-watt 1x12 combo, is powered by two JJ 6L6 power tubes and voiced with two JJ ECC83S preamp tubes, providing all the firepower the modern guitarist needs. Armed with a custom designed EVH 12" Celestion speaker voiced specifically for this preamp circuit, the pristine cleans and searing high gain tones are tight, clear and articulate. The cabinet is constructed out of MDF with special internal plywood baffling for tight and increased bass response, and houses a custom designed EVH 12" Celestion speaker voiced specifically for this preamp circuit, so that the pristine cleans and searing high gain tones are tight, clear and articulate.

Punching above its weight, this combo features two channels with an extra voicing on each for even more versatility. The Green channel boasts an overdrive button to run from clean tones to increased gain, while the Red channel's burn button adds fiery crunch that's ideal for blistering leads.

Each channel houses its own gain and volume controls, allowing for level-matching the volume when switching between the clean and high gain channels. The channel two noise gate's quick attack suppresses any hiss while ensuring all staccato riffing is articulate and crisp, not choked and choppy. The Boost control allows you to add another 10Db of foot-switchable volume to your tone -- perfect for ensuring your solos cut through the mix. The control panel also includes shared EQ (Low, Mid and High), global resonance and presence knobs to adjust the low- and high-end aspects of your tone, and a global reverb control to add the perfect amount of bounce and decay for any room.

Other features include a two-button footswitch, effects loop, dual parallel speaker output jacks, 1/4 power switch to reduce wattage--allowing you to crank the amp and still preserve tone but without destroying your neighbor's solitude, and a speaker-emulated DI XLR with power amp mute for accurate all-tube EVH tone for recording direct or using through any PA system.

Sporting sophisticated and distinctive EVH style, the 5150 Iconic Series 40-watt 1x12 combo is wrapped in either Black or Ivory textured vinyl with a black cloth front grille and features silver and black 5150 and EVH logo badges in the upper left and lower right corners. This all-tube combo is finished off with a brushed aluminum top panel, vintage-style chicken-head knobs and molded black plastic top handle. A high-quality fitted cover is available as an EVH Accessory.

Sounds cool, but they're so cheap that I'm thinking they may not be MIM like the rest of the line?

Yeah, I was wondering why they were at that price point as well.

Odd that it's only up on Reverb. Nothing on Sweetwater or Guitar Center.

These look really cool. I do have to wonder why the price is so low.

Dealers get info, specs, pics, etc. early. Inevitably some small shop effs up and lists it before official channels do.

Lol, they aren’t there on Reverb anymore. They must have eff'd up like you said Jedi.

Interesting first glance at the new Iconic 5150. Usually the description includes the country it’s made in, I didn’t see that mentioned on the listing.

Probably made in Uzbekistan or Slovakia.

Pretty smart marketing on this. I didn't get the chance to see the price before it was taken down but it sounds extremely competitive while offering a similar if not superior product to x1x0 type 2 channel amplifiers, while also positioning the 5153 as a "premium" product.

$899 for the heads, $799 for the combos, $499 for the cabs.

Seeing as the Peavey 6505 head retails for $999 I guess it makes sense. It's almost like a direct response to Peavey's HP2 line - Peavey tried to undercut EVH with the Wolfgangs so now EVH's rebuttal is an undercut OG 5150/6505.

Every other product has started at the premium level and worked its way down though. So I'm interested to see how these sound and how they play out in the market.

You can get a Peavey 5150 for like 400 bucks in good shape. Without Ed around to test and use these products I just donít know.

FWIW, Peavey 5150 designer/engineer James Brown was hired by EVH Gear in January 2019 to begin work on this project. So Ed likely was around and active in the earliest development of it.

But yeah...if I wanted the OG Peavey tones I'd likely be inclined to pick up a used original head or the smaller 6505MH. Though the Iconic combo is priced nicely.

To me it would make more sense if it wasnít super easy to get an original 5150, but theyíre all over the place. Yeah I get that theyíre used and beaten up, but those amps are tanks and assuming no one has really abused them they should work just fine. I wouldnít say Iíve been nice to mine for the last 23 years, but Iíve never had one issue with it. I replaced the tubes once just because I wanted to, but thatís it. So the reliability is there in buying an old one. If I wanted that sound Iíd just buy the Peavey.

I just glanced at used OG 5150 prices on eBay. Theyíre going for $800-$1000.

Man I miss the days when all the Peavey gear was affordable. Just a year or two ago you could get USA Specials for $600 all day long. Hell, I got my USA Standard for $650 in 2003.

On purely an aesthetic level, theyíre embarrassing.

But Iím sure with the Godfather of Soul now a part of EVH, they sound very good though.

Interested to hear a demo to see how similar they get to the Peaveyís and SLOís.
